Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear James,
Long time no see! I hope you are doing great. Being apart for almost ten years since the college was tiring but I've a good news as I'm organising a get-together for all us college friends to celebrate this anniversary. I've decided upon hosting a feast alongside a dance party. Sounds fun right? It would be in some evening throughout any weekend at the Taj hotel as it the best in providing all these services.
This kind of celebration would definitely be fun for all of us guys. Remember all us friends leaving the college every friday evening to have a pizza party. Everyone is going to love this idea of mine as the would feel the nostalgia of those good times.
Anyway, thereare still a lot jobs to do for which i need your help. I'm planning this to happen next month so we need to contact as much friends as we could. I'll be busy making arrangements for the party, so I wonder if you could send invitations to everyone and explain them the situation.
It is so fun even taling about this. I'd really appreciate your help.
Hope to receive your talk on this.
Best of luck,
Mohdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, achieving an appropriate informal tone suitable for writing to a college friend. You clearly state the kind of event you want to organise, mentioning a feast and a dance party at the Taj hotel. You also explain why this is a good idea by connecting it to your shared past and the nostalgia of pizza parties, and you outline the specific help you need, which is inviting everyone. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the explanation of the venue choice or the specific details of the help required could have been extended further. To reach the highest bands, every part of the prompt would need deeper elaboration and a fully sustained line of argumentation throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose and logical flow from stating the news to proposing the event, reminiscing, and finally asking for assistance. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct topics like the event details, the nostalgic reasoning, and the request for help. At the same time, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or reliant on basic linking, such as 'Anyway' and 'It is so fun', and referencing is not always completely clear. To move towards the higher bands, you should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs without relying on conversational fillers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and successfully communicates your message, using informal phrases like 'Long time no see!' and 'get-together'. You make some successful attempts at less common vocabulary such as 'nostalgia' and 'arrangements'. However, there are noticeable word choice, spelling, and phrasing errors, such as 'since the college was tiring' instead of 'since leaving college', 'a good news' where news is uncountable, and missing letters in words like 'taling' and 'thereare'. These minor lexical and spelling slips show an adequate range that gets the job done, but to achieve a higher band, you must demonstrate greater precision, better collocation control, and accurate word forms consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising structures such as 'I wonder if you could send invitations...' and relative clauses effectively. There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as articles ('as it the best'), pronoun confusion ('all us college friends' and 'as the would feel'), and minor preposition or tense slips like 'Being apart... was tiring'. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and your meaning remains clear throughout. To attain a higher band, you would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences using complex structures with tighter control over articles, pronouns, and agreement patterns.
