IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Harshil,
I hope you are doing good. It has been a while since we met. I plan to host a get together party for our batch at my house marking our ten years after completing the college.
I would like the event to begin at five in the evening. Firstly, we will let everybody catch-up with eachother. Thereafter, the main idea of the celebration would begin and that is a two minutes story telling about how thier lives shaped after finishing the college. Later, it would be followed by dinner, music and dance so that everyone has fun.
Accorting to me, it would be great for all of our classmates to reunite and relive some of most memorable time. We will also be able to get in good touch with eachother. But, most importantly I need your assistance with making invitation calls to some of our friends as I dont have everyone's phone number. I figured you would have most of their numbers.
I wish to see you soon and have a great time.
Your sincerely,
Rudresh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task satisfactorily, fulfilling the requirements for a general correspondence letter. You clearly state the kind of celebration event you would like to organise, mentioning a get-together party at your house to mark ten years since completing college. You also explain why this would be a good celebration by highlighting the opportunity to catch up, share personal stories of how lives have shaped since graduation, and enjoy dinner, music, and dancing together. Furthermore, you effectively describe the help needed by asking your friend Harshil to make invitation calls because you lack everyone's phone number. While all bullet points are covered and supported with relevant ideas, some elements could be extended further with additional detail to reach fully developed standards, which places this response comfortably at this performance level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You establish an appropriate informal greeting and introductory purpose right away, followed by well-structured body paragraphs that sequentially discuss the event details, the reasoning behind the celebration, and finally your request for assistance. Cohesive devices and referencing are generally handled well, as seen with transitional phrases like 'Firstly', 'Thereafter', and 'Later', which help guide the reader smoothly through the sequence of events. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct topics, though referencing occasionally feels slightly mechanical rather than entirely flexible. Overall, the arrangement of information remains coherent and easy to follow from beginning to end.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to communicate your ideas clearly. You attempt some less common lexical items and collocations, such as 'reunite', 'relive some of most memorable time', and 'assistance'. However, there are some occasional inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as writing 'Accorting to me' instead of 'According to me', 'thier' instead of 'their', and minor phrasing awkwardness like 'doing good' instead of 'doing well'. These minor errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve further, focus on refining word forms, ensuring correct spelling, and integrating more natural idiomatic phrases suited to personal correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, successfully incorporating structures such as 'I plan to host a get together party for our batch at my house marking our ten years after completing the college' and '...so that everyone has fun.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present, such as unnecessary hyphens or missing articles, along with minor prepositional awkwardness like 'after finishing the college' (where 'college' typically does not require an article). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily understand your message. Good control is maintained over basic sentence mechanics, representing a solid mix of accuracy and structural variety.
