It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Maninder,
I am writing this letter regarding our ten year anniversary and organizing an event to celebrate it.
I would like to plan a song theme celebration in an open area with proper lighting and a good music system. Besides this, live food will be prepared by famous chefs in our area of our choice. There will be no time limit of the event.
According to me this would be the best and unique idea as all our classmates were music lovers and foodies. So, having live food would create an unforgettable experience for everybody and an entry song according the personality would make it more exciting.
I just need somebody to make an list of all our classmates and write a song based on their personalities and shortlist their choice of food items so that arrangements can be made in advance to avoid any delay.
Hope to hear from you soon!
With love,
Jaspal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, friendly purpose. You propose a music-themed celebration with food and lighting, explain that classmates enjoyed music and food, and specify help with compiling names, choosing songs and collecting food preferences. These details make the plan relevant and give the recipient a clear role. The explanation of why the event would be enjoyable is supported, particularly through the idea of a personal entry song, although the reasons could be developed further—for example, by explaining how the event would help classmates reconnect after ten years. Overall, the response fulfils the task with clear ideas, though some support remains general rather than fully elaborated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: purpose, proposed event, reasons, requested help, and a friendly closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Besides this,” “According to me,” and “So” help connect the ideas. The reader can follow the plan without difficulty. To make the cohesion more natural and flexible, avoid relying on somewhat formulaic transitions and connect related details more smoothly. For instance, the food arrangements and classmates’ food preferences could be brought together in the same explanation. The request for help is clear, but a brief transition such as “Could you help me by…” would make the shift from describing the event to asking for assistance more direct.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing an event, including “proper lighting,” “music system,” “unforgettable experience,” and “personality.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is suitable for a friendly letter. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “song theme celebration,” though some combinations are not natural or precise in English. “Live food” is unclear, and “song based on their personalities” may not express the intended idea as naturally as a song chosen to suit each person. Improve collocation and word choice by using established phrases for event planning and catering. More precise vocabulary would make the proposal sound fluent and polished without changing its meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response includes both straightforward sentences and more developed structures, such as the explanation beginning “as all our classmates were music lovers and foodies.” Meaning remains clear throughout, and the letter uses appropriate present and future-oriented forms to describe the plan. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “a song theme celebration,” the article and noun phrase need adjustment; “an list” should be “a list”; and “an entry song according the personality” is missing a necessary preposition and has an unclear singular reference. The sentence beginning “I just need somebody to…” also shifts into a long series of actions that would benefit from clearer parallel structure. Greater accuracy with articles, prepositions and sentence construction would strengthen the otherwise understandable writing.
