IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I hope you're well! It's been a decade since we graduated and I was thinking of organizing a party to celebrate this with our friends and classmates from university.
There's an adventure park that recently opened in Mumbai. We can start off by enjoying drinks by the pool and then head over to the park for an off-roading dirt bike experience. We can re-live our fun times during college while having dinner in the end.
Not only this would give us enough time to spend with each other, it'll also be fun and relaxing and would give us much needed break from our hectic work.
Since I don't have the contact information of every classmate, it'll be a great help if you could get me those details so I can invite all of them to the celebration. Mike's birthday is on the same day so if you could bring a cake, that would be great.
Can't wait to catch up soon.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements: you propose a celebration at an adventure park, explain that it would let classmates reconnect and relax, and ask John to provide contact details and bring a cake. The plan is clear and relevant, and the specific activities—poolside drinks, dirt biking, and dinner—help the reader picture the event. Your reasons are understandable, though the benefit of choosing this particular venue could be developed further; for example, explain how the activities suit your group or connect with shared college memories. The request for help is practical, but you could clarify how John might gather the classmates’ details. Overall, the purpose and ideas are clear, with some room to extend the supporting details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the anniversary, describe the proposed celebration, give reasons for it, and then make requests. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “Not only this” and “Since I don't have the contact information” help connect the ideas. The event details are also presented in a sensible order, from drinks to activities and dinner. To make the links more natural and precise, revise “Not only this would give us…” to “Not only would this give us…” and consider a smoother transition into the birthday-cake request, which is a separate practical detail. The closing is appropriate for a friendly letter. Overall, organisation is strong, with a few cohesion choices that could be more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for an informal letter, including “celebrate this,” “off-roading dirt bike experience,” “re-live our fun times,” and “hectic work.” These choices communicate the plan and its benefits clearly, and the tone is friendly and consistent. There is some flexibility in describing both the activities and the reason for meeting. A few expressions are less natural or precise: “spend with each other” would be better as “spend time together,” while “much needed break” is more conventionally written “much-needed break.” “Organizing” is acceptable, though “arranging” could vary the wording. More precise language about the venue and shared memories would strengthen the description further. Overall, vocabulary is effective, with occasional collocational or phrasing slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex structures, such as “Since I don't have the contact information…, it'll be a great help if you could…” and the paired future construction “we can… and then head over…”. Most sentences are clear and several are accurately controlled. A few grammatical issues remain. In “Not only this would give us…,” the introductory “Not only” requires inversion: “Not only would this give us…”. In “spend with each other,” the grammatical pattern should be “spend time with each other.” The sentence beginning “We can start off…” also shifts from the proposed plan to “We can” without explicitly inviting John, though this is mainly a clarity issue. Continue practising inversion and natural verb patterns; the overall message remains easy to understand.
