IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Hii Ayesha,

Hope you are doing well.I could not belive it's been ten years we are graduated.I am writing to suggest that we should organise a reunion to celebrate this anniversary.

I think it will be great to arrange a dinner at our favouritr resturant and having some fun activites. It will give a chance to everyone to reconnect with each other. After ten years, it will be a great oppertunity for everyone to meet again.

I would really appreciate your help in organising this event. Can you please contact our classmates to ask them who would be able to come.It would also be ba grateful if you create a group, so we can decide the date, time and venue.

Do let me know what do you think about my idea.

Take care.

Yours truly,

Laraib Yaseen.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address all three bullet points: you propose a reunion dinner with activities, explain that it would help classmates reconnect, and ask Ayesha to contact classmates and create a group to decide the arrangements. These details make the purpose clear, but the reasons and practical plan are brief; for example, you do not say when or where the dinner might be beyond “our favourite restaurant,” or explain further why this format suits the anniversary. The response is also 14 words below the required minimum, so there is limited space to develop the ideas. Add a little more detail about the event and the help you need, while keeping the friendly letter style consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the reunion, explain its benefit, request help, and close with a question and sign-off. Paragraphing separates these main purposes effectively, and phrases such as “After ten years” and “It would also be” help connect ideas. Some links are repetitive or slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated explanation that classmates can meet again and reconnect. The request about contacting classmates and creating a group could also be organised more smoothly, with each task stated distinctly. Keep this clear structure, but use a few more natural transitions and avoid repeating the same benefit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, with relevant expressions such as “reunion,” “celebrate this anniversary,” and “reconnect with each other.” However, the range is limited and several spelling errors are noticeable, including “belive,” “favouritr,” “resturant,” and “oppertunity.” Some phrases are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “having some fun activites” and “a great oppertunity for everyone to meet again.” These choices do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and polish. Check spelling carefully and choose more specific event vocabulary, such as “dinner venue,” “activities,” and “catch up with former classmates.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple sentences and some longer structures, including “It will give a chance to everyone to reconnect with each other” and the request beginning “Can you please contact our classmates…”. The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are evident. For example, “it's been ten years we are graduated” has an incorrect verb construction; “we graduated” or “since we graduated” would be more accurate. In “It would also be ba grateful if you create a group,” the conditional pattern is faulty; use “I would also be grateful if you could create a group.” There are also missing spaces after full stops and commas. Practise accurate conditional requests and sentence punctuation.
