IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sara,
It has been so long since I last heard from you. I was thinking of arranging a get-together and inviting all our college friends to celebrate ten year anniversary.
I am planning to organise a party where each one of us can bring their favourite food, and we can enjoy our time by recalling our college memories. I believe adding games would be a great idea to engage everyone. Also, I managed to book a Bollywood singer, who will make this event more entertaining.
I think this way, we can get updates of their lives since we haven't met in years. Music and dance floor will be good to strengthen our bonding and live our old days. Moreover, multiple games, such as throwing a ball and passing the parcel will make the environment more enjoyable.
In order to make this event successful, I will need a cake customised with our group picture. Moreover, some props for the photoshoot and refreshments with a variety of flavours.
I hope this plan will work. I am excited to see you soon.
Best wishes,
XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements: you propose a food-sharing party with games and music, explain that it would help friends reconnect and revisit college memories, and identify items needed for the event. The purpose and friendly tone are clear throughout, and details such as a cake featuring the group picture make the plan personal. The explanation of why this format would be enjoyable is supported by several relevant ideas, although some points—such as how the games would bring everyone together—could be explained more specifically. The request for help is also less direct: you list a cake, photo props and refreshments, but do not clearly ask Sara to arrange or provide them. Making that request explicit and developing the reasons a little further would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The ideas follow a sensible sequence: you introduce the reunion, describe the proposed party, explain its benefits, and then mention practical needs before closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Also,” “Moreover,” and “In order to” guide the reader. This gives the letter a coherent overall arrangement. However, several transitions feel somewhat mechanical, and the paragraph about what you need does not clearly connect the listed items to a request for Sara’s assistance. Some references are also unclear, as in “updates of their lives,” where the pronoun does not have a clear antecedent in the sentence. Use more natural links and make the relationship between each idea explicit to improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly reunion letter, including relevant expressions such as “get-together,” “recalling our college memories,” “customised,” and “photoshoot.” These choices communicate the plan clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural collocations: “celebrate ten year anniversary,” “strengthen our bonding,” and “live our old days” do not sound idiomatic in this context. “Environment” is also less natural than a word such as “atmosphere” when describing a party. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Aim to learn common word partnerships and use more natural expressions for reconnecting, celebrating an anniversary, and creating a lively party atmosphere.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause “who will make this event more entertaining” and the purpose clause “In order to make this event successful.” Most ideas remain easy to understand, and punctuation and paragraphing are generally controlled. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “celebrate ten year anniversary,” the article and plural form are missing; “each one of us can bring their favourite food” has a mismatch between the singular subject and pronoun; and “I will need a cake … Moreover, some props … and refreshments” leaves the second sentence as a fragment. The sentence “Music and dance floor will be good” also needs an article. Check articles, agreement, and complete sentence structure, while continuing to use varied clauses.
