IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Prachi,
I hope this message finds you well. I know it's been a while since we did our last conversation. I am writing this letter in order to share that next month it will be ten years since we graduated from our college and thus I would like to organize an event to celebrate this anniversary with all our friends, classmates and our professors from our college.
Furthermore, I am hoping that I can get permission from our college to organize this event in our old classroom so that we can create paradoxical moment for our friends and classmates. We can keep it simple because we do not want to disturb any other area of the college. For the food I can make arrangements in our campus' canteen. Moreover, I have all of the photos and some videos of our cultural fest and we can play them in background projector, this way everyone can recall their moments.
I find this way much better to recreate our memories together because we all are busy in our life and do not get enough time to spend with our friends, by celebrating our anniversary together we can spend some quality time together and thank our professors for all the supports that they provided during our education journey.
However, I do need your help in organizing and decorating our event place and also in the selection of different food dishes from our canteen menu.
Let me know if you would like to make any changes.
Yours faithfully,
Himani.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, friendly purpose: you propose meeting in the old classroom, explain that it would help everyone revisit shared memories, and ask Prachi to help with decorating and choosing food. The details about the canteen and showing photos and videos make the plan concrete, while thanking the professors adds a relevant reason for the reunion. The explanation of why this format is best is clear, though the point that everyone is busy could be developed further by linking the familiar venue or shared activities more explicitly to making attendance enjoyable. Overall, the task is fully covered and the ideas are supported, with some scope to extend the rationale.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the anniversary, outlines the proposed event, explains its value, and then specifies the help needed. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “However” help signal shifts between ideas. The references to the classroom, food, and photos also keep the plan connected across paragraphs. At times, however, transitions feel somewhat formulaic, and the long second paragraph combines several arrangements that could be grouped more deliberately. The phrase “this way” also refers broadly to the preceding details rather than identifying one specific feature. More varied, precise links and slightly tighter grouping would make the progression even smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a personal planning letter, including relevant expressions such as “organize an event,” “quality time,” “selection,” and “cultural fest.” These choices make the purpose and arrangements easy to understand. Some wording is less natural or precise, however: “create paradoxical moment” does not convey the intended idea of revisiting memories, and “in background projector” is an awkward way to describe showing videos. Phrases such as “our last conversation” and “education journey” are understandable but not idiomatic in this context. Aim for accurate collocations and natural phrasing rather than more elaborate vocabulary; this will improve precision while preserving the friendly tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including purpose and reason clauses such as “so that we can…” and “because we all are busy…”. The message remains clear, and several sentences are controlled well. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “create paradoxical moment” needs an article, and “thank our professors for all the supports” has an unnecessary plural form. The sentence beginning “For the food…” runs into the following idea with a comma, where a full stop or conjunction would be clearer. There is also a tense/wording issue in “we did our last conversation.” Review articles, countable nouns, and punctuation in longer sentences to improve accuracy.
