IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Frank,

How have you been? I hope you are doing well. Can you imagine? this month it would be a 10 years of our college farewell. I want to inform you that, I am planning to bring everyone together with a surprise anniversary event this Sunday.

An invitation card will be sent to everyone's place by me. Don't tell this to our friends, as this would be a surprise party for them, because I am not mentioning the reason and sender's name in this card. Once, they will come on that, they will be amazed to see each other.

I am thinking that reunion is needed for us, as we were so closed with each other at our college time. Since, our last day we have been not seeing each other quite often. This would be an exciting opportunity to get to know about our friend's personal and professional lives.

May I ask for your help to buy some gifts for everyone? Dollar store can be a good idea to get a variety of options in a cheap price. While, I am doing decorations and menu choice for dinner this afternoon.

See you at the party. Love you a lot!

Thank you,

Ayushi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you propose a surprise reunion, explain that classmates have not met often and can catch up on their lives, and ask Frank to buy gifts while you handle decorations and the dinner menu. The purpose and friendly relationship are clear, and the explanation of why a reunion would be enjoyable is relevant. The response also shows some development beyond simply naming an event, particularly through the surprise invitation idea. However, the event plan could be more fully specified: the venue and arrangements for Sunday are not explained, and the reason for celebrating this particular anniversary could be clearer. The request for help is specific, but could include practical details such as a budget or how many gifts are needed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the anniversary plan, describes the surprise, explains the value of meeting again, and then asks for help. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “Since” and “May I ask” help connect the ideas. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. “Once, they will come on that” does not clearly identify where the guests are coming, and “While” begins a sentence that is not properly connected to the request. The opening also moves abruptly from the anniversary to the event details. Use clearer references and transitions—for example, state the venue before explaining what guests will see, and connect your own tasks to Frank’s help in one sentence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and its purpose, including “surprise anniversary event,” “reunion,” “personal and professional lives,” and “decorations.” These choices show some range beyond basic social vocabulary. However, several word-choice and collocation problems make parts of the letter sound unnatural: “college farewell” does not express the anniversary clearly, “closed with each other” is not the usual phrase for close friends, and “in a cheap price” is awkward. “Everyone’s place” is also less precise than a natural phrase for delivering invitations. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than adding more elaborate words; expressions such as “college reunion,” “close to one another,” and “at a low price” would make the message clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex forms, such as “as this would be a surprise party for them” and “Since our last day…”. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “it would be a 10 years” has an incorrect article and number form, while “Once, they will come” uses an unsuitable tense pattern after “once.” The sentence beginning “Since, our last day” is incomplete, and “While, I am doing…” is not correctly joined to the preceding idea. Punctuation also needs attention, including the comma after “While” and the lowercase “this” after a question mark. Practise complete clauses and accurate time expressions while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
