IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sam,
Hope you are doing good these days! I can't believe It's been ten years since we last attended college and now is the time to relive it with all our classmates.
I am eager to throw a party in the farmhouse of my uncle which is vacant these days and will be accessible to all of our friends, also easy to commute. There will be arrangements for barbecue and DJ to dance till late night.
I think all of us can rejuvenate and enjoy on the farmhouse as it is too spacious for 20 to 30 people. It will allow everybody to relax, dance, and eat in an open space under the sky.
My uncle has already permitted me to use the space and all I need is your help with cutting the grass and making seating arrangements for our guests.
I am planning to start off with the preparation this Sunday and hope you see you there to help me in making it out.
Take care,
Sehajveer Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you propose a farmhouse party with a barbecue and DJ, explain that the space will let classmates relax and socialise, and ask Sam to help cut the grass and arrange seating. The purpose and friendly tone are appropriate for a letter to a college friend, and the event plan is supported with practical details such as the venue and guest numbers. To make the ideas more fully developed, clarify how the celebration will bring the group together or add a little more detail about the arrangements, such as when the event itself will take place. The request for help is clear, though specifying how Sam should respond would make the closing more purposeful.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the anniversary, describe the proposed event, explain its advantages, and then ask for help. Separate paragraphs make each part easy to follow, while links such as “as” and “also” connect related details. The friendly opening and closing also suit the format. Some connections could be smoother: the sentence about the farmhouse being accessible and easy to commute to is crowded, and “I am planning to start off with the preparation this Sunday” shifts from the event plan to preparation without clearly linking this to the requested help. Use more precise transitions and make the final paragraph state directly what you want Sam to do and when.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for an informal reunion letter, including “celebrate,” “arrangements,” “spacious,” and “seating arrangements.” These choices communicate the plan clearly, and “rejuvenate” shows an attempt to use less common vocabulary. However, some expressions are not natural in context: “throw a party in the farmhouse” is less precise than “at the farmhouse,” “easy to commute” is awkward for describing a venue, and “making it out” does not clearly express organising the event. “Enjoy on the farmhouse” is also an unnatural collocation. Aim for natural combinations and precise wording; this would make your vocabulary more flexible and accurate while preserving the warm tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “I think all of us can…” and the relative clause “which is vacant these days.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the sentence structures support the letter’s purpose. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “Hope you are doing good,” the adjective form should be “well”; “now is the time” would be clearer as “now it is time”; and “hope you see you there” is missing “to” before “see.” The phrase “easy to commute” also needs a grammatical subject or a different construction, such as “easy for everyone to get to.” Check sentence completeness, verb patterns, and punctuation, including the unnecessary capital in “It's.”
