Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Danish,

I am writing this letter to let you know that I am planning to organize an event because ten years have passed since we left college.

I am planning to have a party to thank all our teachers and principal for their efforts in our education. I am thinking to have some simple games, food stalls and music. I want DJ to play songs, which we can dedicate to our teachers, so that we can make a thankful gesture towards our educators.

I want to celebrate this way so that we can maintain good relations with them, and a relation can be formed which would long-lasting. All the teachers of our college is helpful, so it is the time to reward their hardwork and dedication.

It would be great if you can assist me with seating arrangements as there would be around 200 people attending the event. Also, a suggestion regarding the games to play at event would be beneficial so that every one can be amuzed.

Looking forward for your response.

Kind regards,

Janish Wadhwa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you propose a party, explain that it would help maintain relationships with teachers and recognise their contribution, and ask Danish to help with seating and suggest games. The event details—food stalls, music and a DJ—make the plan clear. However, the task is to celebrate the ten-year anniversary with college friends and classmates, while your response focuses mainly on thanking teachers; it is not clear whether classmates are invited or how the event celebrates your shared college years. The reason for choosing this format is also only briefly explained. Make the reunion purpose explicit and develop why a party would suit the whole group.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce the plan, describe the event and its purpose, then make a practical request and close appropriately. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “so that” show relationships between ideas. This is a coherent structure, with some effective progression. To make the flow more natural and precise, avoid repeating “I am planning” and “I want,” and clarify references such as “a relation,” which makes it uncertain whether you mean a relationship with teachers or among former classmates. A more direct transition from the anniversary to the proposed reunion would also strengthen the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and your requests, including “seating arrangements,” “dedicate,” and “efforts.” There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “a thankful gesture” and “dedication.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise, which limits the flexibility and accuracy of the vocabulary: “a relation can be formed which would long-lasting” and “every one can be amuzed” do not express the ideas naturally. “Thankful gesture” is also less idiomatic than a phrase such as “show our appreciation.” Check spelling and collocations, and choose wording that clearly conveys the reunion and celebration.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex clauses, for example, “I want DJ to play songs, which we can dedicate to our teachers, so that…” This shows some ability to connect ideas, and the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement, articles and verb forms. For example, “All the teachers … is helpful” should use a plural verb, while “a relation … which would long-lasting” needs a complete verb construction. “I am thinking to have” also uses an incorrect pattern; use “I am thinking of having.” Review these structures and check sentence endings and punctuation to improve accuracy while retaining your varied sentence forms.
