IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sam,
I hope you are doing well. The purpose of this email is to discuss about an event organisation to celebrate the anniversary with all our college friends.
Firstly, I would like to organise a dinner party where we can enjoy some delicious food, dance on old songs and some games will be played at the end of the party such as musical chair, singing, which would help to memorize that party.
Also, I think this party is organised by a lot of planning. So that nobody can feel leftover in the whole party and food is selected in the party according to the individual preferences
Lastly, it would be appreciated if you could help me to find a proper place where we can hold this party according to everyone's convinience, and make some invitation cards on priority basis to send in our college group.
Looking forward to your response.
Best Regards,
Adam.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you propose a dinner party, explain that food and activities could make it enjoyable, and ask Sam to find a venue and prepare invitations. The event is relevant and the reader can understand what you want to arrange. The explanation of why this format would be good is less fully developed, however: “nobody can feel leftover” and choosing food to suit preferences suggest inclusivity, but the benefits are not clearly explained. The request for help is more specific, though “on priority basis” does not clarify when the invitations are needed. To strengthen the letter, explain more directly how the dinner and shared activities would help classmates reconnect and make the anniversary memorable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a recognisable progression from the proposed event, to its benefits, to the help you need, and the closing is appropriate. “Firstly,” “Also,” and “Lastly” make the sequence easy to follow, and the requests to Sam are identifiable. However, the linking is somewhat mechanical, and the second paragraph combines planning, inclusion, and food preferences without clearly showing how these ideas connect. The sentence beginning “So that” is also not smoothly attached to the preceding point. Use clearer paragraphing for the three task points and connect each explanation directly to the main idea. This would make the organisation feel more consistently logical and the cohesion less dependent on signposting words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and practical arrangements, including “dinner party,” “individual preferences,” “proper place,” and “invitation cards.” There are also attempts to express more specific ideas, such as making sure nobody feels excluded. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “discuss about,” “dance on old songs,” “memorize that party,” and “feel leftover.” “Convinience” is also misspelled. These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less clear or less natural, although the overall message remains understandable. Aim to learn common word partnerships for social events and use precise expressions such as “reminisce about college” or “feel included.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and attempts at longer structures, for example the sentence describing the dinner, dancing, and games. The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. In “a dinner party where we can enjoy … and some games will be played,” the verb forms do not fit smoothly together; “where we can … and play some games” would be more consistent. “This party is organised by a lot of planning” also has an unclear passive construction, and “So that nobody can feel…” is a sentence fragment. There are further issues with articles and sentence boundaries, particularly in the long final request. Practise building complete sentences and keeping verb forms consistent when joining ideas.
