IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I hope you are fine. It's been ten years since we graduated from college, and I would like to arrange a dinner party at my house and invite all the classmates.
It will be a simple dinner party in which food and drinks will be served. I am planning to do a live barbecue, which all of us will enjoy together. After the dinner, we all will sit and recall our best memories of college while having drinks.
I was thinking of arranging an outdoor event, but I believe it would be good if we stay at home and enjoy ourselves rather than going outside. Since we all will be meeting after ten long years, we will have a lot to share about our personal and professional lives. My kitchen garden is the best place for such gatherings.
I would like your help with the dinner arrangements. I know your cooking skills are second to none, so I will apprecite if you could setup the barbcue station in my garden. For that, you have to arrive early than the given time which is 7pm on Saturday.
I look forward to a great evening and eagerly waiting to hearing from you soon.
Best regards,
Fazal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you propose a dinner party with a live barbecue, explain that staying at home will allow classmates to share updates and memories, and ask John to set up the barbecue station. The reason for choosing your kitchen garden is relevant, and the friendly opening and closing suit a letter to a college friend. Your ideas are extended with useful details, such as the Saturday 7 p.m. timing. To make the response more fully developed, explain a little more about how the event will bring everyone together or clarify what other practical help you need beyond setting up the barbecue. Overall, the purpose and intended arrangements remain clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the anniversary and event, describe the plan, explain why you prefer a home gathering, and then make your request. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “Since” and “After the dinner” help show relationships between ideas. The organisation is coherent, though some connections feel slightly repetitive or mechanical: “I would like to arrange” is followed by “I am planning,” and the preference for staying at home is explained in more than one sentence. The final sentence also combines looking forward to the evening with waiting for a reply, making the closing less smooth. More varied transitions and a tighter ending would make the flow more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the event and request, with relevant phrases such as “dinner party,” “live barbecue,” “personal and professional lives,” and “kitchen garden.” However, the range is somewhat limited, and several choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “setup the barbcue station,” “arrive early than,” and “eagerly waiting to hearing.” There are also spelling errors in “apprecite” and “barbcue.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your plans, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim to use more accurate event-planning expressions and check spelling and word forms carefully; this would make the letter sound more fluent and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause “Since we all will be meeting after ten long years” and the relative clause “in which food and drinks will be served.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the paragraphing and punctuation are generally controlled. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in verb patterns and comparisons: “arrive early than the given time” should be “arrive earlier than the stated time,” while “waiting to hearing from you” should be “waiting to hear from you.” The placement of “all” in “After the dinner, we all will sit” is also less natural than “we will all sit.” Greater accuracy in these patterns would strengthen an otherwise understandable range.
