IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear John,
I hope this letter finds you doing well.
I am extremely excited to give you a invitation note to join the reunion party in our Thomas city part hall, since its been a decade and it would be a amazing meetup party.
Firstly, I've planned few major things, such as decoration and the overall anniversary theme is going to be inspire by our older pictures, especially the hall of fame that we can add pictures of our farewell party and drinks bar would be separately organised in the next hall to keep everybody comfortable including non-alcholics.
It's been a year since i've been thinking to plan this special day because we can recall our all memories and could be able to connect with all fellow friends. Because of fast pacing life we weren't able to be in daily contact, so this would be great to open up again.
Lastly, I was thinking to ask a favour from you about the catering planning, as you live nearby the Thomas city hall you are more familiarised with the options and contarctors and if you can anticipate into this to make the food planning much easier, it would be a big relief.
I will be waiting to have you in our ten years anniversary.
Yours lovingly,
Robin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you propose a reunion party, explain that it would help classmates recall memories and reconnect, and ask John to help with catering. The reasons are relevant, and the request is personalised by noting that he lives near the venue. The event description is less fully developed: the decoration, photographs and drinks arrangements are mentioned, but the exact format and practical details of the celebration remain somewhat unclear. The invitation also sounds as though the event is already planned, while the task asks you to organise it with your friend’s help. To strengthen the response, make the proposal and your request more explicit, and develop how the suggested arrangements would make the reunion enjoyable for everyone.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall shape, moving from the invitation and event idea to the reasons for celebrating and then the request for help. Paragraphing supports this progression, and signposts such as “Firstly” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the main points. However, some links feel mechanical, and the long second and final paragraphs combine several ideas without clear separation. For example, the decoration, photographs and drinks arrangements could be organised into a more focused event-description paragraph. The reference to “this” in the catering request is also not entirely precise. Use transitions more naturally, divide related details into shorter units, and make references explicit to improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including “reunion party,” “anniversary theme,” “farewell party,” “memories” and “catering planning.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and phrases such as “open up again” convey the wish to reconnect. However, several inaccurate word choices, collocations and spelling errors make the language less natural: “a invitation note,” “a amazing meetup party,” “inspire by,” “anticipate into this,” and “contarctors.” “Non-alcholics” is also misspelled and is not the most natural way to describe guests who do not drink. Aim for precise, conventional combinations such as “send you an invitation,” “inspired by,” and “look into catering options.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would make your vocabulary more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “since” and a conditional request beginning “if you can.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. Examples include “its been a decade” instead of “it’s been a decade,” “I've planned few major things” without an article, and “we can recall our all memories,” where the word order is incorrect. The final request also runs several clauses together, making its structure difficult to follow. Practise articles, possessive and auxiliary forms, and clause boundaries; splitting the long request into two sentences would improve control while preserving your ideas.
