IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Jasmeen,
I hope you are doing well. I've been thinking about our college time and it's been a decade since we graduated. Now, I'm planning to host a reunion party to celebrate this anniversary with all my classmates.
I know it can be surprising for you but I'm planning to organize an event where we can cherish our college life. There is a famous place in Ludhiana known as Karachi Boys, I believe their party hall would be great for us as we can play some games and enjoy lunch.
I think arranging a party in the afternoon is better as it would be easier to attend for both boys and girls. This event will not only offer us opportunity to be together again but also will reunite some of the friends who have lost touch since then.
I would need your assistance in contacting missing contacts from my list and sending them invites. I will greatly appreciate your efforts in this as it will remove a lot of burden from my shoulders.
I hope you like this idea and will help me in contacting friends.
Lots of Love,
Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, friendly purpose. You propose a reunion party at Karachi Boys, explain that an afternoon event would be easier for classmates to attend and could reconnect people who have lost touch, and ask Jasmeen to find missing contacts and send invitations. These details make the plan relevant and give the reader a clear role. The reasons for choosing the venue and format are understandable, though they could be developed further—for example, explain what makes the hall especially suitable or how the games and lunch would help everyone reconnect. Overall, the task is covered clearly, with some ideas supported more fully than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the anniversary, describe the proposed venue, explain the timing and benefits, and then make your request for help. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “not only … but also” connect related benefits effectively. The opening and closing also suit a personal letter. Some transitions are a little abrupt: “I know it can be surprising for you” does not clearly connect to the plan, and the venue paragraph could lead more smoothly into the explanation of the afternoon timing. A more direct transition, such as “I’m considering an afternoon celebration because…”, would make the progression feel more natural while preserving the clear overall structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal invitation, including “reunion party,” “cherish,” “reunite,” and “assistance.” These choices communicate the purpose and tone clearly, and the reader can understand the proposed arrangements. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural expressions: “an event where we can cherish our college life” and “missing contacts from my list” could be phrased more naturally as “reminisce about our college days” and “classmates whose contact details I’m missing.” “Remove a lot of burden from my shoulders” is also an awkward collocation. More precise, natural phrasing would improve flexibility and control, especially when describing the venue and the help you need.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex structures, and many sentences are accurate, such as “This event will not only offer us opportunity to be together again but also will reunite some of the friends who have lost touch since then.” You also use present perfect and modal forms appropriately in places, including “it’s been a decade” and “I would need your assistance.” A few errors remain in otherwise clear writing. For example, “offer us opportunity” needs an article (“an opportunity”), and “I know it can be surprising for you” would be more naturally structured as “I know this may come as a surprise to you.” Check articles and sentence phrasing during proofreading; these issues do not prevent understanding.
