IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Amanda,

I'm writing to let you know that i'd like to organise an event to celebrate a ten years anniversary with all our gang from the good old days.

I'd like us to celebrate this event at a dinner at the old Chicken republic Restaurant just behind the catholic church. It was the same place we had a celebration after we wrote our last paper where we played different games, took amazing pictures and had lots of alcoholic drinks.

I'm thinking this would be a good way to catch up as we are not only only going to sit across tables and just talk about milestones achieved for the last decade, it's also because we are meeting at a restaurant that reminded us of the good times we shared together while in school.

Since you still have the contact of everyone, i'd like you to create a whatsapp group where everyone is added and invited specially to the dinner. I'd also like that you make reservation at the Restaurant since it's close to where you live. One last thing, i'll appreciate it if you came with your Camera because we would be taking pictures after the dinner.

All the best and thanks,

Nwamaka

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you propose a dinner at the former Chicken Republic, explain that it would help classmates reconnect and recall shared memories, and ask Amanda to contact everyone, book the restaurant, and bring a camera. The personal details about the post-exam celebration make the plan relevant and give it some support. The explanation of why this format would work is clear, though the reasons are somewhat repetitive and could be developed further—for example, by explaining what would make the evening enjoyable for classmates who have not kept in touch. Overall, the purpose and requested actions are easy to understand, and the ideas are extended sufficiently, even if some remain general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce the anniversary, describe the proposed venue and its significance, explain the benefits, and then set out the help you need. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “Since you still have the contact of everyone” make the shift to the requests understandable. The closing is also appropriate for a friendly letter. Some linking is less smooth: “not only only” is an accidental repetition, and the sentence beginning “I'm thinking this would be a good way” combines two reasons in a slightly awkward way. More concise transitions and clearer separation of the two reasons would make the cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a familiar, informal letter, including “catch up,” “milestones achieved,” and “the good times we shared.” These expressions help convey the friendly tone and the personal significance of the venue. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural choices: “a ten years anniversary” would be more naturally expressed as “our tenth anniversary,” while “invited specially” is less idiomatic than “personally invited.” “All our gang” is conversational but could be replaced with “our former classmates” for a slightly more polished tone. Greater accuracy in collocations and more precise wording would strengthen the vocabulary while preserving the warmth of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes both straightforward sentences and more complex structures, such as “Since you still have the contact of everyone, I'd like you to create a WhatsApp group.” Meaning remains clear throughout, and the requests are generally expressed in complete sentences. Some grammatical errors remain, including “a ten years anniversary” (use “a ten-year anniversary” or “our tenth anniversary”) and “I'd also like that you make reservation,” which needs a more natural structure such as “I'd also like you to make a reservation.” The sentence beginning “I'm thinking this would be a good way” is also difficult to control because its “not only … it's also because” construction is unbalanced. More consistent control of articles, sentence patterns, and capitalisation would help move beyond this level.
