IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Parag,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing this letter to invite you to watch a football game followed by a dinner at my house on October 19, 2026.

I would like to organize an event in which you, me and all of our friends from college can have snacks while watching a football game and supporting our favourite team "FC Barcelona". Afterwards we'll have pizza and we'll end the night with some dessert.

I think this would be the best way to celebrate our ten year anniversary as it would remind us of "how our days used to be" ten years ago. it will be a nostalgic moment for all of us and on the top of that I have also kept all the pictures I have taken during our college days. so, after dinner we can also see those memories while we are having ice cream.

for the night, I have already ordered the pizza and ice cream, the only help I would need from you is to bring snacks because as you know I am terrible at buying snacks. Except for that, I think I have invited everyone but for a safer side, I will also attach the list of guests, just go through it and feel free to inivite anyone I am missing.

Thank you and looking forward to see you on 19th.

Yours faithfully,

Dhruv

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you propose watching a football match followed by dinner, explain that this would recall college life and allow everyone to look through old photographs, and ask Parag to bring snacks and check the guest list. These details make the plan personal and relevant, and the reason for choosing the event is supported rather than merely stated. The invitation and closing also suit the purpose. To make the response more fully developed, clarify practical details such as the time the match begins or whether guests should bring anything else. The phrase “ten year anniversary” could also be made more precise by explicitly referring to the ten-year anniversary of leaving college.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The ideas follow a clear sequence: invitation and event plan, reasons for the celebration, then the help you need. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “Afterwards” and “so” help show how the evening will unfold. The reader can follow the arrangements without difficulty. Some connections are less smooth because several ideas are packed into long sentences, particularly the paragraph beginning “I think this would be the best way.” The repeated use of “and” also makes parts of the final paragraph feel like a list. Separate the memories and guest-list arrangements into shorter sentences, and use a few more varied transitions to make the progression more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly invitation, including “nostalgic,” “supporting our favourite team,” and “memories,” which convey the atmosphere of the event. The wording is generally understandable, but some choices are informal or imprecise, and a few phrases do not sound natural in this context. For example, “on the top of that” is an awkward connector, while “for a safer side” is not the usual expression. There are also spelling errors in “inivite.” Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make the letter sound more fluent and controlled without changing its friendly tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and complex forms, such as the reason clause “as it would remind us” and the conditional suggestion “we can also see those memories.” Meaning remains clear throughout, and several sentences are well controlled. Some errors in grammar and punctuation remain, however. The sentence beginning “it will be a nostalgic moment” starts with a lowercase letter, as does “so” after a full stop. In “looking forward to see you,” the verb pattern should be “looking forward to seeing you.” The opening invitation also shifts from “I” to “you, me and all of our friends,” making the subject awkward. Review sentence boundaries, capitalization, and verb patterns to improve accuracy.
