IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mark,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to invite you in an event that I am celebrating of the ten years since I left college.

I like to organise a grand party for my all college friends. I decided held an event on November 20 because that was the last day of my college. I decided to organise a party in Moon restaurant. We will play old games that we used to play in classroom. Apart from this, we will listen old music that was all friends favourite. Honestly, I believe it would we great celebrate by playing games and listening music. Due to this, we can recall beautiful old memories. As well as, we can also discuss previuos unforgetable clasroom activities.

I need some help from you to organise the event. Firstly, can you handle the catering of the event, which I find very difficult to decide. Secondly, I need help to select some old college friend pictures that I wanted to paste on the restaurant walls. Which can make graceful memory.

I would really appreciate your assistance on this matter. See you soon.

Yours lovingly

Seema Rani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three required points: you propose a party at Moon Restaurant, explain that games and music will bring back college memories, and ask Mark to arrange catering and help choose photographs. These details make the purpose clear and keep the letter relevant. The explanation of why this format would be enjoyable is understandable, but the reasons are brief; for example, you could explain how sharing the old games or displaying photographs would help everyone reconnect. The requests for help are specific, though the photograph task could be clearer about what you want Mark to do. The response addresses the task well overall, with some ideas less fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall shape: an opening, a paragraph describing the celebration, a paragraph requesting help, and a friendly closing. Sequencing words such as “Firstly” and “Secondly” help distinguish the two requests, while “Apart from this” adds another activity. However, some links feel mechanical or unclear. “As well as” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence, and “Which can make graceful memory” is a fragment whose reference is uncertain. Grouping the event details and the reasons for choosing them more deliberately, then linking the requests directly to Mark, would make the progression more natural. The organisation is coherent, although cohesion is not consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and its purpose, including “grand party,” “catering,” “old games,” and “unforgettable classroom activities.” There are also attempts to express personal feeling through “beautiful old memories.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “invite you in an event,” “listen old music,” and “make graceful memory.” Spelling errors in “previuos,” “unforgetable,” and “clasroom” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Focus on common combinations such as “invite you to an event,” “listen to music,” and “create lasting memories,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including “I need some help from you to organise the event” and the relative clause in “the catering of the event, which I find very difficult to decide.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “I decided held an event,” “it would we great celebrate,” and “we will listen old music”; these involve verb forms, sentence construction, and missing grammatical words. “Which can make graceful memory” is also an incomplete sentence. Use a wider range of accurately formed clauses, and check verb patterns after “decide” and “would,” as well as articles and prepositions. More consistent control would make the letter smoother to read.
