IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Ishita,
I hope this letter finds you in a good health and prosperity. I cannot believe it has already been five years since you moved to Australia. I still remember our college days and the fun we used to have during that time.
I am thinking to organize a meetup party on 25th of this month as it is going to be ten years since we graduated from college. I am planning to call our whole group of friends and you are the first one I am writing this letter to. This party is just for us 6 friends only. No spouses or kids are allowed in the party.
Life has been so busy since past few years and we all could never had a get together. I think meetup party will be a perfect way to reunite.
There is nothing I need your help with. Your presence alone will lighten the party up.
Hope to see you soon.
Yours truly,
Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The letter addresses all three required points: you propose a reunion party, explain that busy lives have prevented the group from meeting, and tell Ishita that her presence is the help you want. The purpose is clear and the friendly tone suits a college friend. However, the event is only briefly described: “meetup party” does not explain what the group might do or where it will take place. The explanation for choosing this format is also quite general, and the request for help is unclear because you first say you need no help, then imply that Ishita’s attendance is important. Develop these points with practical details and a more specific reason for the celebration to make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The ideas are arranged in a generally clear order: you open with personal memories, introduce the proposed event, explain its purpose, and close with a request to attend. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and the reader can follow the main message. Some connections are less smooth, however. The shift from saying the party is “just for us 6 friends” to addressing the whole group could be clarified, and “There is nothing I need your help with” conflicts with the following sentence about Ishita’s presence. The letter would progress more naturally if you grouped the event details and the specific help you want together, using clearer links between them.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “organize,” “reunite,” and “celebrate,” and the personal references help establish an appropriate friendly tone. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “meetup party,” “lighten the party up,” and “in a good health and prosperity.” Repetition of “party” and “friends” also limits the range. Choose more natural collocations and precise event-related language—for example, describe it as a reunion dinner or get-together, and specify the kind of gathering you have in mind. This would make the letter sound more fluent and polished while retaining its warm, informal style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentences, and most of the message remains easy to understand. You use time clauses and reasons, as in “as it is going to be ten years since we graduated” and “since past few years.” Some grammatical errors remain, including “I am thinking to organize” (use “thinking of organizing”), “we all could never had” (use “could never have had”), and “in a good health.” There are also issues with articles and prepositions in phrases such as “on 25th of this month” and “since past few years.” Review verb patterns and article use, and vary sentence structures while keeping them accurate.
