IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Rohini,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to discuss my plan to celebrate the anniversary with our friends and batchmates from college. Since it has been a long time to meet our fellow I would like to organize an event.

Ideally, I would love to plan a one-day event, which starts with a relaxing brunch at a renowned restaurant near the central park. Afterwards, we will have the chance to organize some fun activities in the park, such as rowing a boat in the lake, some games in the sports center and many more. Finally, we will end the day with a party at a rooftop hotel just outside the park.

It would be a great opportunity for all of us to meet after such a long time. The event will take place on Sunday. For those who do not have whole day to spare can also come only for dinner to join us. In this way, I hope to bring all of us together.

To make this celebration happen, I do need your help for sending out invitations. I recall that you have contact details of almost everyone. Therefore you are the ideal person to take this responsibility.

I look forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Amreen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you propose a one-day celebration, explain that it would let classmates reconnect, and ask Rohini to send invitations using her contact list. The plan is specific and easy to picture, with brunch, park activities and an evening party. Your explanation of why this format is suitable is clear, especially the option for people to join only for dinner. To strengthen the response further, develop the rationale a little more—for example, explain why the mix of activities would appeal to different classmates or how the flexible attendance makes the event easier to join. The purpose and friendly tone remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the anniversary, outline the day’s activities, explain the benefit of meeting again, and then make your request. Paragraphing supports these shifts, and linking expressions such as “Afterwards,” “Finally,” and “Therefore” help the reader follow the plan. The sequence within the event is particularly easy to understand. Some connections could be made more naturally, however: “Since it has been a long time to meet our fellow” does not clearly link the reason to your proposal, and “In this way” repeats the preceding idea rather than adding a distinct link. Smoother transitions and clearer referencing would make the cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for a friendly planning letter, including relevant expressions such as “anniversary,” “renowned restaurant,” “rooftop hotel,” and “take this responsibility.” These choices make the proposed event concrete, and the meaning is consistently understandable. There are, however, some awkward word choices and collocations: “our fellow” is incomplete, “organize an event” is less natural here than “hold an event,” and “whole day to spare” would be more idiomatic as “the whole day free.” “Batchmates” may also be less familiar to some readers than “former classmates.” More consistently natural phrasing would add flexibility and precision to your vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a useful mix of simple and more complex forms, including the relative clause “which starts with a relaxing brunch” and the conditional structure “For those who do not have whole day to spare can also come only for dinner.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the closing is appropriately controlled. Some grammatical errors remain, though: the opening fragment “Hope you are doing well” would be more complete as “I hope you are doing well,” while “Since it has been a long time to meet” has an incorrect construction. In the sentence about dinner, the opening “For those who…” phrase is not correctly connected to the main clause. Correcting these patterns and checking articles would improve accuracy.
