Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Jan,
I hope your are doing well, lately I was thinking about having a gathering party to all our friends from college. After 10 years of graduation it will be really great to meet again and spend some time togther bringing up our memories from college. I would really appreciate it if you could help me organizing this party.
Regarding the organization, I was thinking about having it in the "sonesta" hotel, that we have our graduation party in it. I think it is the perfect fit for this party, as it is located in the downtown and have amazing amenities. Moreover, I was thinking about bring the "pop stars" musical band, as I remember we loved it so much during college years.
I thought of this because I thought it will bring up memories from college. as we will feel if we are in college again. Having reunion party would gather us away from work and give us a chance to enjoy our time together.
I would really appreciate it if you could help me providing all email addresses for our friends, so I could send them the invitations.
Yours sincerely
Diana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requirements: you propose a reunion at the Sonesta hotel, explain that it would revive college memories and offer a break from work, and ask Jan to provide classmates’ email addresses. The purpose and friendly tone are clear. The event and venue are relevant, but some ideas are only briefly explained: for example, you mention the band and the hotel’s amenities without saying how these would contribute to the celebration. The request for help is also quite narrow; you could specify whether Jan might contact classmates, help choose a date, or coordinate bookings. The response already gives a clear, relevant plan, but fuller development of these details would make the letter more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a generally logical sequence: you introduce the reunion, describe the venue and entertainment, explain the reason for the event, and finish with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and links such as “Moreover” and “Regarding the organization” guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “I thought of this because I thought” repeats the same idea, while the lowercase “as” after a full stop makes the relationship between the sentences unclear. The opening paragraph also combines the invitation idea and request for help quite quickly. More varied, precise transitions and clearer links between the plan and its benefits would strengthen the progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main plan, including “gathering,” “amenities,” “reunion,” and “invitations.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, which limits the clarity and flexibility of the vocabulary. For instance, “gathering party” is redundant, “bring up our memories” is not the natural expression for recalling the past, and “help me providing” does not express the request idiomatically. There are also spelling errors such as “togther,” and the band name and hotel name would normally be capitalised consistently. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling and word forms; this would make the letter sound more fluent and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex forms, such as “I would really appreciate it if you could help me…” and the clause explaining why the hotel is suitable. Meaning is generally understandable, but errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. Examples include “I hope your are,” “it is located … and have,” and “I was thinking about bring.” The sentence beginning “I thought of this because…” also has a lowercase start after a full stop, and its following clause is not clearly attached. Review subject–verb agreement and verb patterns after “about,” and proofread sentence punctuation. More accurate control of these structures would improve the letter while preserving its range.
