IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Jay,
I hope you have been doing well. I am letting you know that I am planning to organise an event in which all alumanies will be invited. First of all, I would like to organise a small party at one of the restaurent in my town. Moreover, everyone would enjoy spending time with each other. I am also thinking about refreshments for guests.
Furthermore, it has been almost ten years we have not met. So I think this is a good chance for all to celebrate together. I already book the restaurent by calling the manager. We would also recall all the memories we made during college time.
Finally, I need your help to arrange refreshments for everybody according to your choice. Also, I do not have some contacts which I need your help to find out, as I updated my phone recently.
I am really excited to see you on the event.
Best regards,
Ashutosh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you propose a restaurant party, explain that classmates can spend time together and recall college memories, and ask Jay to arrange refreshments and help recover missing contacts. The purpose and friendly tone are clear. The response also gives a useful practical detail by saying you have booked the restaurant. This meets the task well, though the reasons for choosing this format are only briefly explained, and the request for help with contacts could be more specific—for example, asking Jay to contact particular classmates or share an updated list. Developing these points with a little more detail would make the ideas more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the reunion plan, gives reasons for celebrating, then explains the help needed and closes warmly. Paragraph breaks support this progression, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” make the stages easy to follow. However, the connectors sometimes feel mechanical, and the first paragraph moves from the event idea to refreshments without a clear link. The phrase “I am also thinking about refreshments” is then repeated in the request paragraph, so the organisation could be tighter. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect related details more directly to create smoother progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the reunion plan, including “organise,” “celebrate,” “refreshments,” and “memories.” The tone is appropriate for a friend, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate word choices and spelling. For example, “alumanies” is not the appropriate form here; “alumni” or “former classmates” would be clearer. “Restaurent” is misspelled, and “according to your choice” sounds unnatural in this context. The range is adequate for the task, but more accurate collocations and careful spelling would make the letter sound more natural and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple sentences and more developed forms, such as “I am letting you know that…” and “as I updated my phone recently.” Most ideas are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some verb forms and sentence patterns need attention: “it has been almost ten years we have not met” should be “it has been almost ten years since we last met,” while “I already book the restaurant” needs a past form such as “I have already booked.” There are also article and preposition issues in “at one of the restaurant” and “see you on the event.” Improving these patterns while retaining varied sentence structures would strengthen accuracy.
