IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear kennedy,
I hope you are doing well and keeping safe. I am writing this letter to discuss an idea for celebrating our tenth college anniversary. I believe it would be wonderful for us to reunite with our former classmates.
I'd like us to organise a reunion party for all of us in the set. I'd also like it to be in a hotel that has a resturant. This will enable us arrange music , dancing, food, drinks and games. We would even share photographs and memories from our college days. For example, a dinner party would be lovely.
Similarly, I think this occasion would be good because it would give us the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and catch up with each others life. Also, we would share our achievements and experience over the past ten years. In addition, we will all experience the love and support we once had with each other while we were still at the college.
I will love to seek for your assistance in these areas. Help me contact our classmate by creating a whatsapp group to share information. Moreover, by this means you can assit me in collecting contrubutions from participants. On the one hand, you can also help me make arrangements for the food, drinks, venue, music and a well suitable decoration.
I would be glad if you consider my situation favourable and I appreciate you for your time.
Best regards,
Felix Chibueze.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you propose a reunion party, explain that it would help classmates reconnect and share their experiences, and request help with contacting people, collecting contributions, and arranging the venue and refreshments. The purpose and friendly tone are clear throughout, and details such as sharing photographs and memories make the event more concrete. The reasons are relevant, although some are expressed generally—for example, “love and support” could be linked to a specific benefit of meeting again. The request for assistance is also comprehensive, but you could make the friend’s role and next steps more precise, such as asking them to contact a named group of classmates or confirm a venue.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from the proposed event, to reasons for holding it, to the help you need. Separate paragraphs make these stages easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Similarly,” “Also,” and “Moreover” help connect related points. The sequence within the event paragraph is also logical, moving from the venue to possible activities. At times, however, connectors feel slightly mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely: “Similarly” introduces another reason rather than a comparison, while “On the one hand” is not followed by a contrasting point. Use simpler links where appropriate, and connect each request directly to the action you want your friend to take.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for a social invitation, including “reunite,” “reconnect,” “achievements,” and “contributions.” These choices help communicate the event and its purpose. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “resturant,” “assit,” and “contrubutions.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “all of us in the set,” “catch up with each others life,” and “a well suitable decoration.” Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, refer to “our former classmates” and “catch up on one another’s lives.” The vocabulary is adequate to convey the message, but more accurate phrasing would make the letter sound more fluent and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences are clear and accurate, such as “I am writing this letter to discuss an idea” and “This will enable us arrange music, dancing, food, drinks and games.” The latter, however, needs a grammatical pattern such as “enable us to arrange.” Other errors include “catch up with each others life,” where the possessive and plural form need correction, and “I will love to seek,” where the verb construction is not appropriate for this request. The closing sentence, “I would be glad if you consider my situation favourable,” is also grammatically awkward. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more consistent control of verb patterns, possessives, and conditional phrasing would strengthen accuracy.
