Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear lovepreet,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to tell you about the event which I would organize on our passing 10 years since college.

I am thinking to set up a surprise birthday party for our close friend simran . we will invite our all close friends and classmates. She would be really happy to see all the collegemates after such a long time.we will not only play some music and enjoy delicious food, but also play some games together.

I really appreciate you if you could help me in this surprise. Firstly, I want a suggestions that if we could arrange it in small cafe or at my house? Secondly , I need to make invitation for sending each friend. I will take care of food and cake. Moreover, we will also decorate the area with some balloons and banners.

I would be really greatful if you help me to do such things. I look forward for your response with some ideas.

Best wishes,

Gurman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover the main points by proposing a celebration, explaining its appeal, and asking your friend to help with arrangements. The reunion element is clear in “invite all our close friends and classmates,” and you mention practical tasks such as choosing a venue and sending invitations. However, the task asks for an event celebrating ten years since college, while the letter shifts to a surprise birthday party for Simran. This makes the purpose of the event unclear and only partially addresses the anniversary. The reasons for choosing this format are also brief. To strengthen the response, keep the anniversary as the central occasion and explain more specifically why your proposed event would suit the group.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall shape: an opening, a paragraph describing the event, a paragraph requesting help, and a suitable closing. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Moreover” help the reader follow the arrangements, and the requests are generally easy to identify. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some control of progression. However, the shift from an anniversary reunion to Simran’s birthday interrupts the development of the central idea. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the list of tasks, and punctuation spacing occasionally makes the text less polished. Keep the occasion consistent and connect the requests more naturally to the event plan.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough relevant vocabulary to communicate the basic plan, including “surprise birthday party,” “classmates,” “delicious food,” “invitation,” and “decorate.” These choices make the proposed activities and practical needs understandable. However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice or spelling problems reduce precision, such as “passing 10 years since college,” “a suggestions,” and “greatful.” “Set up” and “do such things” are also rather general for a letter about organising an event. Aim for more accurate, natural collocations and specific planning vocabulary, such as describing a “ten-year reunion” and asking your friend to “help coordinate the invitations.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the contrast in “we will not only play some music … but also play some games together” and the conditional request “if you could help.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms are noticeable. For example, “I am thinking to set up” needs a different verb pattern, and “I really appreciate you if you could help” does not form the intended conditional correctly. There are also issues with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “I want a suggestions” and the run-together sentence after “long time.” Practise accurate verb patterns and conditional requests, and proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries.
