Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well.
It has been ten years since we left the college.I am writing to seek your help to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college. I am planning to organize a pool party in Regal hotel near your house.
As all are busy in their hectic work schedule and we all are only connected via social media. Therefore, I think organising an event may give us a break from our busy life also may offer a chance to recall all the memories.
As the venue is in your hometown so, I might need your assistance with shopping and arranging permits for serving alcohal in the party. I vividly remembered that last time you accommodate me with some permits. In addition to this, you also have good relationship with grocery vendors.
If you have a time for a quick catch-up, please let me know so we can discuss about the event in detail.
Best wishes,
Manjit

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three required points: you propose a pool party at the Regal Hotel, explain that it would give busy former classmates a chance to reconnect and recall memories, and ask John to help with shopping and permits. The purpose and friendly relationship are clear, and the request for a catch-up provides a suitable next step. The explanation of why this particular event would be enjoyable is less developed, however, and the practical help requested could be more specific—for example, what items need buying or what arrangements John could make with vendors. The response covers the task well overall, but some ideas need fuller support to make the proposal more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible sequence: greeting and purpose, reasons for the celebration, a request for help, and a closing invitation to discuss details. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “As the venue is in your hometown” help connect the request to John. Some links are less smooth: “As all are busy… Therefore” creates a fragment-like transition, while “also may offer” leaves the relationship between the two benefits unclear. The shift from the party plan to permits and grocery vendors is understandable but could be signposted more clearly. Overall, the organisation is coherent, though a few connections feel mechanical or imprecise; clearer sentence links would make the flow more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a friendly planning letter, including relevant expressions such as “celebrate this anniversary,” “hectic work schedule,” “recall all the memories,” and “assistance.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “organise a pool party in Regal hotel” would be more natural as “hold a pool party at the Regal Hotel,” and “good relationship with grocery vendors” is better expressed as “good relationships with local suppliers.” There are also spelling errors in “alcohal” and “accommodate.” More precise, natural phrasing and careful spelling would strengthen the letter’s fluency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “As the venue is in your hometown…” and “so we can discuss…”. The meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. “It has been ten years since we left the college” needs more natural article use (“left college”), and “As all are busy… Therefore” is not a complete, well-formed sentence. In “I vividly remembered,” the tense should match the present relevance of the memory (“remember”), while “you accommodate me” needs a past-tense form. The sentence beginning “also may offer” also lacks a clear subject. Review sentence boundaries, tense consistency, and clause structure to improve accuracy.
