IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Raman,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding organizing an event to meet all my college friends. We cannot believe that it has been ten years since we met

I would like to plan a party at the Moonwalk Resort because it is very popular in our city and all kinds of facilities are available in that resort. Moreover, some groups of friends are living in other cities which are very far from our city. Hence, I think a one-week event will be beneficial for us.

Only a dinner party is not sufficient for this gathering. That's why, for a whole week, we can remember our college memories. You also gave me a suggestion about this get-together.

Let me know what you think about my idea. I am eagerly waiting for that day.

Warm Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the occasion and propose a week-long celebration at Moonwalk Resort, giving a relevant reason: classmates travelling from other cities could make the longer event worthwhile. However, the task is only minimally addressed because the plan remains vague and the requested help is not described. The line “You also gave me a suggestion” does not say what you need Raman to do, such as contact classmates, arrange accommodation, or help plan activities. The reason for choosing the resort is also general, and the week-long format needs clearer explanation. The response is 7 words below the required minimum, which further limits the development of the ideas. Add specific arrangements and a direct request for help to address every bullet more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter has a recognisable sequence: an opening, the proposed venue and duration, a reason for a longer gathering, and a closing. Basic linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Hence,” and “That’s why” help connect some ideas. However, the progression is not consistently clear. The sentence about Raman’s earlier suggestion appears abruptly, and “Only a dinner party is not sufficient” is not clearly connected to the preceding explanation. Paragraphing is also limited, with several different points grouped together. Organise the letter into clear paragraphs for the occasion and plan, the reasons, and the help you need; use references such as “this week-long reunion” to make connections clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the basic plan, including “celebration,” “facilities,” “gathering,” and “college memories.” These choices show some range beyond very basic wording. However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural for this context, such as “organizing an event to meet,” “all kinds of facilities,” and “remember our college memories.” “I am eagerly waiting for that day” also sounds less natural than a direct expression of anticipation. More precise collocations would make the letter clearer and more fluent. For example, describe the event as a “college reunion,” specify the resort’s “accommodation and activities,” and say you would like to “reminisce about our college days.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains easy to understand. The sentence beginning “Moreover, some groups of friends are living in other cities” shows an attempt to explain the circumstances with a supporting clause, while “Hence” introduces a result. Some grammatical choices need attention: “since we met” does not clearly express the ten years since leaving college, and “Only a dinner party is not sufficient” has an awkward negative construction. The sentence “You also gave me a suggestion about this get-together” is grammatically possible but unclear in context. Use a clear time expression such as “It has been ten years since we left college,” and check sentence construction and punctuation when linking ideas.
