IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear friends,
I hope you all are doing well. It's been few years since we all met. Due to our personal and financial commitments, we were not able to meet each other since the time we graduated 10 years ago. I am organizing an event in an attempt to bring us all together and celebrate the tenth year college graduation anniversary.
The Celebration will include a drama depicting the life of college students. The play also showcases the importance of friendship playing a big role in obtaining a graduation degree. The night will end with a cake cutting ceremony celebrating our bonds with each other.
This event brings us to a common platform and an opportunity to meet each other. This is missing in everyone's life since a lot of us choosed a different career pathway and many of us settled in different cities. Moving forward, we should do more gatherings like this to stay connected.
I have selected a couple of hotels offering better services and discount offers. I welcome your opinion in selecting an ideal option.
Yours loving,
Yash Mehta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the main purpose and include the three requested elements: a drama and cake-cutting celebration, reasons for bringing former classmates together, and a request for help choosing a hotel. The explanation that friends now live in different cities gives a relevant reason for meeting. However, the event plan and the help you need are only partly developed: it is unclear whether the recipient should help compare hotels, make a booking, or assist with another practical task. The letter also opens with “Dear friends,” although the task asks you to write to one college friend, and “Yours loving” is not a natural sign-off. Clarifying the recipient’s specific role and adding a practical detail about the event would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the reunion, describes the celebration, explains its value, and ends with a request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Moving forward” make the progression easy to understand. The ideas within the event paragraph are also connected, moving from the play to the cake-cutting ceremony. To make the organisation more flexible and polished, connect the request more directly to the event plan—for example, explain what you would like your friend to do after reviewing the hotel options. Some transitions, such as “This event brings us to a common platform,” are broad rather than specific, so clearer links to the preceding details would strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a reunion letter, including “personal and financial commitments,” “depicting,” “graduation anniversary,” and “settled in different cities.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, some awkward or imprecise expressions: “common platform” is vague in this context, “better services” does not specify what makes the hotels suitable, and “Yours loving” is not a conventional closing phrase. “Choosed” is also a spelling/word-form error; use “chose.” Aim for natural collocations and precise wording, especially when describing the event and the help you want. This would make the letter sound more fluent and idiomatic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. For example, “This is missing in everyone’s life since a lot of us…” links an observation to its explanation, while the event description uses a participial phrase in “a drama depicting the life of college students.” Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. In “It’s been few years,” an article is needed (“a few years”); “we were not able to meet … since” would be more naturally expressed with the present perfect; and “a lot of us choosed” should be “a lot of us chose.” Review article use and tense choices, and check verb forms before submitting.
