Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Rahul,
How are you? It's been 10 years since we have not met. I wanted to invite you on my 10 year anniversary as a small celebration. Its been a decade that I was not in touch with all of our friends. So this celebration is to cherish the time we spent together long back.
As we know festive season is around the corner so I am planning to organise a diwali party for our 8 friends. I specifically chose this time of the year because we could easily get leave off from work to meet our families and friends. Also, It will be great to enjoy Diwali with family and then an unforgettable party with friends. The party will be on Oct 23, 2026, Saturday in churchville hall at 08:00pm.
Additionally, I want your favour to ask your friend tarun for his catering service if he can provide us with some discount as I have already spent extra $1000 out of my budget so I wanted to go easy with the food department. I have heard his service is fantastic also his food tastes amazing. I have been requested by other friends to ask for his catering. Please let me know if he is ready to give us some discount and I am ready to pay his staff the usual 13% tip system.
Hope you hear from you soon.
Take care,
Jasmine Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you propose a Diwali party, explain that the festive season makes it easier for friends to meet, and ask Rahul to approach Tarun about catering and a discount. The date, venue and time also make the plan concrete. The explanation of why this format would be enjoyable is relevant, but the celebration is described as being for “our 8 friends” without clarifying whether classmates and families are also invited, and the request for help is focused mainly on one catering favour. To strengthen the response, make the guest list and Rahul’s role clearer, and develop the reasons for choosing this event a little further. The letter is purposeful, though some details are less fully developed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you open with the anniversary, introduce the proposed celebration, then explain the practical help you need before closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “Additionally” and “Also” help connect related points. However, some links feel mechanical, and the opening moves between not having met and not being in touch without making the relationship between those ideas fully clear. The final sentence, “Hope you hear from you soon,” also makes the closing reference unclear. Use more precise transitions and check that pronouns clearly identify the person being addressed. These adjustments would make the organisation feel more consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a friendly invitation, including “cherish the time,” “festive season,” “catering service,” and “discount.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, however: “invite you on my 10 year anniversary” and “go easy with the food department” do not express the intended meaning idiomatically. There are also spelling and capitalisation slips, such as “Its,” “diwali,” and “tarun.” Aim for more precise phrases such as “invite you to our ten-year reunion” and “reduce the catering costs,” and proofread names and festival names. This would improve accuracy while retaining the friendly style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the reason clause in “I specifically chose this time of the year because…” and the conditional request about whether Tarun “can provide us with some discount.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “It's been 10 years since we have not met” uses an incorrect tense and negative construction; “I wanted to invite you on my 10 year anniversary” has an awkward grammatical pattern; and “Hope you hear from you soon” has an unclear subject and object. Review tense choices for time since a past event, article use, and pronoun structure. More accurate control of these patterns would make the letter read more naturally.
