IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Fatima,

Hope you are in pink of health. It has been ten years since our graduation, and I was thinking of celebrating this milestone by organizing a reunion party with our fellow mates.

I believe that during these years, each one of us would have progressed a lot in their lives and to catch up and relive the golden era of our college time, we should meet up. For organizing this, I suppose the best venue would be our college campus. I plan to contact the administration regarding the permission soon. Following that, I was thinking of sending digital invites to our friends inviting them along with their spouse. I believe, since you are experienced in content creation, you can help me with that. Additionally, you had your uncle into catering. So, it would be great if you can contact him and get a quote, as we all loved the delicacies from his restaurant. This would be for approximately 100 people, I suppose.

This is just a rough proposal of what I thought of. Let me know how you feel about it. Let's catch up soon!

Warm regards,

Hannah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you propose a reunion party, explain that it would let classmates catch up and revisit college memories, and request help with invitations and catering. The specific suggestions—using the campus, inviting spouses, and planning for around 100 people—make the proposal clear and relevant. Your reasons are understandable, though the explanation of why this format would be especially suitable could be developed further; for example, you could explain how the campus or shared meal would help recreate the college atmosphere. The requests are practical and personalised to Fatima’s skills and family connection. Overall, the purpose and friendly tone are clear, with ideas extended and supported, although some reasoning remains fairly general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce the anniversary and event, explain the purpose, outline arrangements, ask for help, and close by inviting a reply. Linking expressions such as “Following that” and “Additionally” help the reader follow the sequence, while the paragraphing separates the main proposal from the closing. The references to Fatima’s content-creation experience and her uncle’s catering also connect naturally to the requests. At times, however, several planning details are packed into one long paragraph, and “I believe” is repeated. Grouping the event rationale separately from the practical arrangements, and varying or reducing repeated framing phrases, would make the organisation feel more polished and the cohesion less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate the event and its arrangements, including “milestone,” “reunion,” “venue,” “digital invites,” and “delicacies.” These choices give the letter a warm, personal tone, and the language is generally clear. Some expressions are less natural or precise in this context: “fellow mates” is redundant, “in pink of health” is an awkward idiom, and “golden era of our college time” is not a natural collocation. “Organizing” and “organising” also use different spelling conventions, so consistency would improve control. Aim for familiar, accurate collocations rather than ornate phrases; this would make the vocabulary sound more fluent while preserving the friendly style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response includes a useful mix of sentence forms, including the complex explanation beginning “I believe that during these years” and the conditional request “it would be great if you can contact him.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few grammatical slips remain. “Hope you are in pink of health” omits the subject and article expected in a complete sentence (“I hope you are in the pink of health”), while “each one of us would have progressed … in their lives” has an awkward agreement and pronoun pattern. In “you had your uncle into catering,” the verb construction is incorrect. Reviewing sentence completeness, agreement, and verb patterns would help make the varied structures more consistently accurate.
