IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Aman,

I hope you're doing great! It's been ages since we last caught up. I have a fascinating news to share with you, which you be interested to hear.

I'm planning to organise a re-union party, where we can meet our old friends and classmates from college after a decades. I planned it to happen on my birthday, next month on 6th of November, at our college itself. I have already got the permission from college management after the college hours.

I firmly believe that, it would give us a break from our tedious schedule and would allow us to relive those memories of college for a shot period. Everyone can share their memorable stories and emotions. It would be a better way to bring every old friend close.

I would be grateful if you could help me in organising it. The major help you can do is providing free catering, since you own a restaurant, this would help to diminish some budget.

I hope you will help me in this event and hope to see you soon.

Take care,

Ramneet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you propose a reunion at the college, explain that classmates can revisit memories and reconnect, and ask Aman to provide catering because he owns a restaurant. The specific date and venue make the plan clear, and the friendly tone suits a letter to a college friend. The explanation of why this format would be enjoyable is relevant, but it remains somewhat general; for example, you could explain how meeting at the college would bring back shared experiences. The request for help is also quite narrow, focusing only on free catering. To strengthen the response further, develop the reasons and clarify whether you need help with other arrangements, such as contacting classmates or organising activities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from greeting and announcement to the event details, its benefits, and your request for help. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “I firmly believe” and “I would be grateful” guide the reader through your purpose. The opening and closing also maintain an appropriate friendly tone. Some links between ideas are less smooth: the birthday date is introduced without explaining its connection to the anniversary, and the catering request runs together with the reason for it in one long sentence. A few transitions, including “I hope you will help me in this event,” sound repetitive after the earlier request. More precise linking and clearer separation of the request from its explanation would make the progression even more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for this familiar topic, including “re-union party,” “relive those memories,” “memorable stories,” and “organising.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the informal expressions in the opening suit the recipient. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations. “A fascinating news” is not idiomatic, “for a shot period” appears to mean “for a short period,” and “diminish some budget” is an awkward way to describe reducing costs. “After a decades” also has an incorrect plural form. Aim for natural combinations such as “share some exciting news,” “for a short time,” and “reduce the costs”; this will make your vocabulary more precise without changing your friendly style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “where we can meet our old friends” and the reason clause “since you own a restaurant.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “which you be interested to hear,” the verb phrase needs a modal or auxiliary, such as “which you may be interested to hear.” “After a decades” has an article-and-number error, while “I planned it to happen” shifts tense awkwardly from the current plan. The sentence beginning “The major help you can do” also needs a more suitable grammatical construction, such as “The main way you could help is by providing catering.” Check articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries when editing.
