IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Amna,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing because it's been ten years since we left college. I'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with our college friends and classmates. As you know, it's my birthday month, and I would like to organise an event on my birthday. It is a very simple event, such as a reunion party and birthday celebration; no need to worry about the celebration. I have made all the arrangements for us. I think it would be good to celebrate this coming Friday night because the next day we all have the day off from work since we left the college; this is our first meeting again. I would like all of us to enjoy it, like in our college days. The most important thing is that Rida is helping me to organise the event. I need your help with a few things. Could you contact our old classmates and invite them? It would also be great if you could bring a dessert. Rida is already helping me with the decorations and food, so we only need to manage the guest list.

Please let me know if you can help.

Best wishes,

Sumbal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three requirements: you propose a reunion combined with a birthday celebration, explain that Friday suits people who are off work the next day, and ask Amna to invite classmates and bring dessert. The friendly opening and closing also suit the purpose. The explanation that this is “our first meeting again” and that you want to enjoy it “like in our college days” gives the event personal significance. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the event plan—for example, where it will take place or what guests can expect—and explain why a reunion is especially suitable for marking ten years since college. The arrangements are mentioned, but some details remain general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The information is generally easy to follow: you introduce the anniversary, describe the proposed celebration, give a reason for the timing, and then make requests. The closing is appropriate, and the questions about contacting classmates and bringing dessert make the requested help clear. However, most of the letter is presented as one long paragraph, so the shift from explaining the event to asking for help is not visually clear. Some links also feel abrupt, particularly “The most important thing is that Rida is helping me” before the request to Amna. Use separate paragraphs for the plan and the requests, and connect related ideas more smoothly to create clearer progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a familiar social letter, including “reunion party,” “anniversary,” “arrangements,” “decorations,” and “guest list.” These choices make the purpose and practical requests understandable. Some wording is repetitive or imprecise, however: “organise an event” appears several times, and “no need to worry about the celebration” is unclear because it does not explain what Amna need not worry about. “The next day we all have the day off from work” communicates the reason for Friday, but could be expressed more naturally as having the following day off. Vary repeated terms and choose more precise phrases for the event and its arrangements to show greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex forms, such as “I think it would be good to celebrate this coming Friday night because…” and the polite request “Could you contact our old classmates and invite them?” Most sentences are understandable, and the message is not impeded by the grammatical slips. Some sentence construction and punctuation need attention. The clause “because the next day we all have the day off from work since we left the college” combines two reasons in a confusing way; separate the idea about the day off from the reference to college. The sentence beginning “It is a very simple event” is also awkwardly joined to “no need to worry.” Review clause connections and use punctuation to separate complete ideas more clearly.
