IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear friend,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to invite you to celebrate 10 years of togetherness.

It's been many years since we have seen each other. So, I have decided to organize an event to gather all of our friends and celebrate together. I am planning to cut a cake and have dinner and fun together and to remember all of our memories and moments which we made with each other.

I think it would be a good idea to celebrate in this way because it's been a long time since we have left school. I really wanted to organize this event for so long and I don't want to postpone this event anymore.

I want your help to arrange this event. I am thinking to look for a good event planner so that our event won't get destroyed. Please try to help me to organize this event.

I hope that you would like my idea and I look forward to your reply.

Regards,

X-Y-Z

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you propose a reunion with cake and dinner, explain that it has been a long time since the group met, and ask your friend to help arrange it. The purpose is clear and the ideas are relevant. However, some parts are less fully developed than others. The reason for choosing this format is mainly that you have not met for a long time, while the practical request is vague: “I want your help” and “Please try to help me” do not specify what your friend should do. Explain why a shared meal and reminiscing would suit the group, and give a concrete task, such as contacting classmates or comparing venues, to make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph about the event, an explanation, a request for help, and a closing. This makes the main message easy to follow. You also use basic links such as “So,” “because,” and “and” to connect ideas. At times, however, the progression feels mechanical or repetitive. For example, “I want your help” is followed by “Please try to help me,” without adding a distinct detail, and “event” is repeated several times. Improve the flow by grouping the event details together and then making a specific request. More varied transitions and clearer references to the celebration would make the connections between sentences smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, with relevant expressions such as “celebrate,” “memories,” “event planner,” and “organize.” The reader can understand the proposed reunion and the help you need. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or unnatural for this context. “10 years of togetherness” does not clearly convey a college reunion, while “our event won’t get destroyed” is an unsuitable way to describe successful planning. Repeated use of “event” and “help” also limits variety. Choose more precise phrases for the occasion and the practical arrangements, and use natural collocations such as “organise a reunion” and “book a venue.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, including “I think it would be a good idea to celebrate in this way because…” and “so that our event won’t…”. Most of the message remains understandable, and the errors do not prevent the reader from following your plans. Some grammatical choices need attention: “I am thinking to look” should be “I am thinking of looking,” and “since we have left school” would be more natural as “since we left college.” The phrase “I really wanted to organize” also shifts into the past even though you are describing a current intention; “I have wanted to organise” is more suitable. Practise verb patterns and consistent tense choices to improve accuracy.
