IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Tj,

I hope you're doing well.

I am writing this letter to inform you about the event I am planning to organize to mark our decade aninversary of graduation.

I'm planning to organize a grand patly where I would like to invite all of our friends for get together. In this partly I'm planning to do 'Brinze' which we used to do during our college. after having a drink and dinner I'm also going to arrange quiz at the end.

I know we haven't met all together after our garduation. This is the reason why I'm organizing this party to mark our 10th year anniversary.

I know you've recently purchased a brand new music system, can you please bring that over to my place as I do't have one. Apart from that I will be in preparation for this party could you also please invite all of our friends.

I can't wait to meet you all after ages.

Best regards,

Jay Corey

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you propose a party with dinner and a quiz, explain that the group has not met since graduation, and ask Tj to bring a music system and invite friends. These details make the purpose clear and keep the letter relevant. The explanation of why this format would be enjoyable is less developed, however: you mention the long gap since meeting, but do not explain why the party activities would suit the group or help everyone reconnect. The request for help is clearer, though it could include practical details such as when the event will take place or how Tj should contact the others. Developing these points would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph describing the event, an explanation of its purpose, and a final paragraph requesting help. This sequence is easy to follow, and the closing is appropriate for a friendly letter. Some connections between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “This is the reason why” repeats the explanation rather than extending it, while “Apart from that” introduces a second request without clearly linking it to the preparations. The event paragraph also moves quickly from the party to drinks, dinner, and a quiz. Use a wider range of natural links and make the relationship between each detail explicit to create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main plans and requests, including “anniversary,” “celebrate,” “music system,” and “preparation.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “aninversary,” “patly,” “garduation,” and “do't” appear in the letter. Some phrases are also unnatural or unclear, particularly “organize a grand party” followed by “do ‘Brinze’,” whose meaning is difficult to identify. “For get together” is not an idiomatic expression in this context. Aim for accurate spelling and natural collocations, and choose precise words for the activities you plan. This would make your vocabulary more reliable and easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, including “I know we haven't met all together after our graduation” and the request beginning “can you please bring that over to my place.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “invite all of our friends for get together” needs an article and a more suitable preposition, and “after having a drink and dinner I'm also going to arrange quiz” needs clearer sentence punctuation and article use. The request paragraph also joins two questions without clear punctuation. Practise accurate articles, sentence boundaries, and the structure of polite requests while retaining your attempts at longer sentences.
