IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Joey,

Hopefully, you and your family are in great spirits! I'm so sorry for not being in touch lately, but I wanted to make up for it now by sharing some good news - I'm planning for an event to celebrate our 10 years of college passout.

I'm not sure if I have mentioned this before, but I wanted to attend a traditional night garba. Therefore, I planned a garba night event and I'll send invitation to our batchmates and friends.

To be honest, it will be an ideal way we can meet each-other while having a fun. Additionally, we can recapitulate our old memories from the college time.

I hate to ask, but would you mind decorating the stage for the event? Also, I'd be grateful if you help me in finding the best Gujarati folk singer.

Give my love to your family. Do get back to me whenever you get a chance. Can't wait to see you soon!

Cheers,

Anshu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you propose a garba night, explain that it would let classmates meet and revisit college memories, and ask Joey to decorate the stage and find a Gujarati folk singer. The friendly tone and personal details suit a letter to a college friend. The explanation of why this celebration is suitable is relevant, but remains brief; for example, you could explain why garba would be especially meaningful to your group or how it would make the reunion memorable. The event plan could also be clearer about practical details, such as when or where it might take place. The main ideas are present, with some parts developed more fully than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from greeting and announcement to the event idea, its benefits, requests for help, and a warm closing. Paragraphing separates these functions effectively, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “Also” help the reader follow the points. The sequence is logical and the informal sign-off fits the relationship. Some connections could be smoother: “Therefore” does not clearly explain how wanting to attend a traditional garba night leads to organising one, and “To be honest” is not necessary before the explanation. Make the relationship between your personal interest and the reunion plan more explicit, and use linking phrases only where they add a clear connection.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a friendly letter, including “celebrate,” “batchmates,” “decorating the stage,” and “Gujarati folk singer.” These details make the event easy to picture, and the meaning remains clear throughout. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices and collocations, such as “college passout,” “traditional night garba,” “having a fun,” and “recapitulate our old memories.” These attempts at more specific language show range, but they reduce naturalness. Choose established expressions such as “ten years since we graduated,” “garba night,” “have fun,” and “reminisce about our college days.” Also check the natural phrasing of “send invitation” and “help me in finding.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message is easy to understand. For example, “I’d be grateful if you help me…” expresses a polite request, while the closing sentences are controlled and clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. In “I’m planning for an event,” the verb pattern should be revised; “I planned a garba night event” also shifts awkwardly from the present plan to the past. “I wanted to attend… Therefore, I planned…” would be clearer as a consistent present intention. In addition, “I’ll send invitation” needs an article or plural form, and “while having a fun” contains an article error. These issues rarely obstruct meaning, but more consistent control would strengthen the letter.
