IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Aman,
I hope you're doing well! It's been a decade since we left college so I decided to organise an event with all our classmates and friends on August 31, 2026 to celebrate this anniversary.
I would like to organise a night party followed by drinks and food and as it is a weekend, most of us could make up on that day. After a lot of brainstroming, I went forward with a night event as majority are busy during the days in their personal and professional life and thus an after party event will be best in this situation. Most of the work to organise this party has already been done but I would need your help to hire a professional photographer because we need to keep all the memories with us.
Anyway, I'd better get going. I look forward to hearing from you in the earliest possible.
Regards,
Harjot

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you propose a night party with food and drinks, explain that a weekend evening suits classmates’ schedules, and ask Aman to help hire a photographer. The purpose and friendly tone are clear, and the request is relevant. However, the explanation of why this format is suitable is somewhat repetitive: the weekend and people’s daytime commitments are both mentioned without much further detail. The help requested is also quite narrow, and the letter could explain what you would like Aman to do, such as contact photographers or compare prices. More specific development of these ideas would make the response feel more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible order, moving from the anniversary plan to the event format and its rationale, then to the request for help and a closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “as it is a weekend” and “Anyway” help connect the ideas. Some links are less smooth, however: the long second paragraph combines the event choice, its justification, the work completed, and the request, making several functions compete for attention. “After a lot of brainstorming” also leads into “I went forward with” without a particularly clear transition. Separating the rationale from the practical request and using more precise links would make the organisation more flexible and polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a friendly planning letter, including “celebrate this anniversary,” “professional photographer,” and “keep all the memories.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision: “make up on that day” does not convey attendance naturally, “after party event” is awkward in this context, and “in the earliest possible” is incomplete. “Brainstroming” is misspelled, and “went forward with” is less idiomatic than a direct phrase such as “decided on.” Aim for accurate collocations and natural phrasing, especially when describing availability, the event format, and when you expect a reply.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are clear, including “Most of the work to organise this party has already been done.” The sentence beginning “After a lot of brainstroming” also attempts to connect a reason and a result, showing some range. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “I would like to organise a night party followed by drinks and food and as it is a weekend,” the clauses need clearer punctuation or restructuring. “Most of us could make up on that day” also has an incorrect verb pattern, while “I look forward to hearing from you in the earliest possible” is grammatically incomplete. More careful clause boundaries and complete expressions would improve accuracy.
