Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear sohail,

I am formally writing you this letter about the event of my marriage anniversary. As you know 10 years ago we left the college after completion of our degree.I decided to invite all my old college fellows at my anniversary which is on the monday of coming week.

I think it is a good idea to meetup with all of them on same spot because on coming monday there is a bank holiday,So it will be long weekend and hopefuly every one is avaiable.

I also need your suggestion about the venue. I already check the availbilty of a resturant which is opposite to our college. If we all meet over there then we also recall our old memories when we used to go there after finishing of college periods.

I need your help for decoration as you have done your degree in event managment so i thought you have better suggestion and ideas for the event.

Regards,

Ali Haider.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address the main purpose by proposing a reunion at a restaurant near the college and asking Sohail to help with decoration. The reason—that a bank holiday may make attendance easier and the venue could bring back memories—is relevant. However, the task asks for a celebration of ten years since leaving college, while you describe it as “my marriage anniversary,” which makes the occasion unclear and changes the focus. The event itself is also only briefly described, and the help requested could be more specific, such as asking your friend to contact classmates or arrange decorations. Clarify the anniversary and develop each requested point more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce the event, explain the timing and venue, and then ask for help. Paragraph breaks make these stages easy to follow, and links such as “because” and “If we all meet over there” show how ideas relate. Some connections are less smooth, however: the opening moves from the college reunion to a marriage anniversary, and the venue paragraph shifts from asking for a suggestion to saying you have already checked a restaurant. The sequence would be clearer if you stated the reunion plan first, then explained the date and venue, and ended with a precise request for help.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the basic plan, including “bank holiday,” “venue,” “decoration,” and “recall our old memories.” These choices suit the topic, although some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “meetup with all of them on same spot,” “college periods,” and “event of my marriage anniversary.” Spelling errors in “hopefuly,” “avaiable,” “availbilty,” and “managment” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe a “college reunion” and meeting “at the same place.” A slightly wider range of event-planning vocabulary would help you explain the arrangements more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, such as “If we all meet over there then we also recall our old memories,” so there is an attempt to vary sentence forms. Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I am formally writing you” needs a different verb pattern, and “on the monday of coming week” is missing articles and has incorrect capitalization. The sentence beginning “As you know 10 years ago” also needs clearer punctuation and structure. Review articles, prepositions, and sentence boundaries, and use a consistent tense when describing the planned event and its possible benefits.
