Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Jacob,

Hope you'll be fine. Im writting this letter to you to know that i am planning to host a party next month for our college classmates and friends. This party was our "10 years anniversary".

I think this is the good time for us to celebrate our ten years being graduated in college. Since everyone of us are busy in our work and we have limited time. I decided to host this event for us to see each other again and cathing up. I also hired a live band for us since most of our friend love music and it has beatiful voice.

If you are not busy next week. I want you to help me to buy everything we need for this event. Also your the only one have contact to some of our classmate and friends. Could you help me to send invitation or can you do a group chat and add to the group all of are classmatess and friends

Yourstrully,

Jaks

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you propose a party next month, explain that it would let classmates meet and catch up, and ask Jacob to help buy supplies and contact former classmates. The live band also gives the event a relevant, personal detail. The purpose is clear overall, but some ideas are less fully explained: for example, you mention that everyone is busy and has limited time without showing how the party suits those circumstances, and the practical arrangements (such as a venue or date) remain vague. Develop the reasons and make the request more specific—for instance, ask Jacob to contact named groups of classmates or help choose a suitable date. This would make the letter more complete and purposeful.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall shape: an opening that introduces the plan, a paragraph explaining the celebration, and a final paragraph requesting help. The ideas generally progress in a sensible order, and links such as “Since” and “Also” help connect them. This already gives the reader a coherent account, but some connections are abrupt or unclear. “Since everyone of us are busy in our work and we have limited time” does not clearly lead into the decision to host the event, while the final request moves quickly from buying supplies to creating a group chat. Use clearer transitions and group related requests together; for example, explain how Jacob’s contacts will help with invitations, then state the specific organising tasks you need him to take on.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main plan, including “host a party,” “live band,” “invitation,” and “group chat.” These choices suit an informal letter to a friend. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling or word-choice errors reduce accuracy, such as “writting,” “cathing up,” “beatiful,” and “classmatess.” Some phrases are also unnatural: “ten years being graduated in college” and “it has beatiful voice” do not express the intended meaning clearly. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully. Phrases such as “celebrate ten years since we graduated” and “the band sounds great” would express your ideas more idiomatically and precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more developed sentences, including the reason clause beginning “Since” and the conditional request “If you are not busy next week.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb forms occur across the letter. For example, “everyone of us are” should use a singular verb, and “I decided to host this event for us to see each other again” needs a clearer construction. “Could you help me to send invitation” also needs an article or plural form. The closing request contains several clauses joined without clear punctuation. Practise building accurate sentences with subordinate clauses, and proofread agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
