Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Kashif,
I hope you are doing well. It has been ten years since we completed our college. Now, I would like to arrange an event to celebrate one decade of completing our college, with all our friends and classmates. I would like to arrange a masquerade party. I believe that masquerade theme would be great since it has been a long time we met; in addition, it would be fun to recognize eachother.
I believe that it is a good way to remember our old times together with eachother and share our success stories as well. After completing college everyone is busy in their lives and this party will give us the opportunity to bring our oldselves back.
I need your assistance to organise this event with me. I want you to arrange the vanue for the event. Once you told me that your uncle has a restaurant with a party hall. I would appreciate if you talk to your uncle and book the party hall for coming friday. Additionally, check the decorations that they are matching the theme of the party. I am extremely excited to meet you all.
Thank you in advance.
Yours faithfully,
Zaviyar Shaikh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you propose a masquerade party, explain that it would help classmates reconnect and share their successes, and ask Kashif to arrange the venue and check the decorations. The purpose and friendly relationship are clear throughout, and the request for help is specific, including the restaurant hall and booking. Your reasons are relevant, though the explanation of why a masquerade is especially suitable is brief; “it would be fun to recognize eachother” could be developed by explaining how masks or costumes would make the reunion memorable. Overall, the task is fully covered with ideas extended, although a little more specific support would make the proposal more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from greeting and event proposal, to reasons, to the practical request, and then a suitable closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, while links such as “in addition,” “as well,” and “Additionally” connect related points. The sequence of requests is also easy to understand. Some linking and reference are slightly repetitive: “with eachother” appears twice close together, and “this party” refers back clearly but the explanation could be joined more smoothly to the preceding idea. The overall organisation is logical and cohesive; varying the transitions and tightening repeated references would make the flow more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a social letter, including relevant terms such as “masquerade party,” “celebrate,” “success stories,” “assistance,” and “decorations.” These choices communicate the plan effectively, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “completing our college” is less natural than “graduating from college,” and “arrange the venue” is better expressed as “book the venue.” There are also spelling or form issues in “eachother,” “oldselves,” and “vanue.” These do not prevent understanding, but greater accuracy and more natural phrasing would improve the overall control of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “since,” a time clause beginning “Once,” and a conditional-style request. Most sentences are understandable, and the message remains clear despite some grammatical errors. For example, “it has been a long time we met” needs a construction such as “it has been a long time since we met,” while “I would appreciate if you talk” would be more accurate as “I would appreciate it if you could talk.” The sentence “check the decorations that they are matching” also needs restructuring, for example, “check that the decorations match the theme.” More consistent control of clauses and verb forms would strengthen accuracy.
