Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Grace,

How have you been? I am writing to let you know about my plans to organize an event to celebrate this anniversary with our friends and classmates from university. Its over ten years since we left school.

I'm thinking of organizing a dinner at the park close to the college, there would be game shows and time for exchange of gifts. At the dinner ,we would get to check on each other and reminisce about school time.

I think is a good idea because we get to catch up and offer help if the need arises. It also improve bonding and time for holiday especially some of us that are workaholic.

Would you kindly help in sending mails to our friends and classmates making sure everyone is fully aware of the occasion. I'm also in need of event planner for this event because it is going to be a memorable gathering for us.

I am looking forward to your contribution on how to make this event successful.

Thanks for your time.

Kind regards,

Lynda.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you propose a dinner near the college, explain that it would let classmates catch up and reminisce, and ask Grace to contact people and help find an event planner. These details make the purpose clear and the ideas relevant. The explanation of why this format would be good is present, but “It also improve bonding and time for holiday” is unclear, so this reason is less fully communicated than the practical requests. The event itself could also be described more precisely—for example, how the dinner and activities would be arranged. The friendly opening and closing suit a letter to a college friend. To strengthen the response further, develop the reasons and event details more clearly and consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the anniversary, describe the proposed celebration, explain its benefits, and then ask for help. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “I think” and “Would you kindly” help signal the shift from explanation to request. The opening and closing also make the message feel complete and appropriately personal. Some links between ideas are less smooth: the sentence about “bonding and time for holiday” is difficult to follow, and the transition from asking Grace to send emails to finding an event planner could be made more explicit. Use clearer connections to show how each request contributes to organising the event, while retaining the effective paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including “celebrate this anniversary,” “reminisce,” “catch up,” and “memorable gathering.” These expressions help convey a warm, social tone, and the reader can understand the main plans and requests. Some choices are imprecise or awkward, however: “game shows” may not describe the activities you intend, “time for exchange of gifts” is not a natural phrase, and “time for holiday” does not clearly express your meaning. “Sending mails” is also less natural in this context than referring to invitations or messages. Aim for more precise collocations and wording, especially when describing the activities and benefits, so your ideas sound natural as well as understandable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. For example, the request beginning “Would you kindly help…” communicates a clear action, while the letter uses present and future-oriented language to discuss the plan. Some grammatical errors remain, including “Its over ten years” instead of “It’s been over ten years,” “I think is a good idea” instead of “I think it is a good idea,” and “It also improve” instead of “It also improves.” There are also punctuation and sentence-boundary problems, such as joining two independent clauses with a comma in “at the park close to the college, there would be game shows.” Check subject–verb agreement, missing subjects, contractions, and punctuation when editing.
