Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sam,
Time flies but college friends are never forgotten, I am writing this letter to organize a party as we are approaching 10th anniversary of our college graduation.
I am planning to have a character based party as we used to have it during our college days. Each person will be assigned a movie character in which he or she will have to dressed up and appear in the party. we will randomly give the character to each individual, we can also change as per the request.
The reason to celebrate in this way is all our most fun filled parties used to be character based parties. And now some of our collegues will come with there children as well they will also enjoy alot. Our memories will be refreshed and new memories will be created.
I want your support in arranging this event, although we will hire event management company to manage all the party arrangements. But the most difficult part which we need to do is find the contacts of all our college mates and invite them with the unique characters assigned. We can create a random character assigner and feed all the invitees numbers to it it will search them and assign them with the most perfect fit character.
I would be very thankful to you if you could help me in this regard. Looking forward for your response.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requirements: you propose a character-themed party, explain its connection to enjoyable college celebrations and the chance to make new memories, and ask Sam to help locate classmates and send invitations. The purpose and friendly relationship are clear. The explanation of why this format would work is relevant, but the point about children enjoying the event is not fully explained, and the proposed “random character assigner” is difficult to picture in practice. To strengthen the response, clarify how the activity would work and make the requested help more specific—for example, ask Sam to contact particular classmates or help compile a guest list. The main ideas are present, with some details less fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: you introduce the anniversary, describe the party, give reasons, and then explain the help you need. Separate paragraphs make the main stages easy to identify, and the closing suits an informal letter. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “The reason to celebrate in this way is…” begins a new point abruptly, while the long sentence beginning “But the most difficult part…” combines several steps and becomes hard to follow. The reference in “it will search them” is also unclear. Use clearer links between the reason and its supporting details, and divide the planning explanation into shorter, logically connected sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the task, including “anniversary,” “assigned,” “arrangements,” and “refreshed,” and the reader can understand the proposed event. There is some attempt at more specific language, such as “character based party” and “random character assigner,” but several choices are awkward or imprecise. “Character-based” needs a clearer description, and “most perfect fit character” is unnatural. Spelling and word-choice slips such as “collegues,” “alot,” and “there children” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and precise wording: describe the event as a costume party, and explain that guests will be assigned a character to portray. Proofreading will help make your vocabulary more reliable.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “although we will hire…” and “as we used to have it…”. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some errors in verb forms, sentence boundaries, articles, and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “he or she will have to dressed up” needs the verb form “dress up,” and “as we are approaching 10th anniversary” needs an article before “10th anniversary.” The sentence beginning “Time flies” joins two independent ideas with only a comma, and “we will randomly give…” starts with a lowercase letter after a full stop. Review verb patterns and sentence punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
