IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing great. I am writing this to organise an event for the celebration for all of us.

Since, it had been ten years, we left college. I decided to organize a formal dinner in my farmhouse on 21st of September. The reason to choose this date is that we have convocation on the same day and it also falls on the weekend. As a result, it will be accessible for everyone to join that amazing dinner in the natural environment.

I personally believe that it is a opportunity for all of us to stay in touch and especially on the dinner day we will spend time by reliving the memories of the college. Moreover, formal dinner will give us ample time to chit chat and discuss about the upcoming events. For example, if I choose pool or club party, all our classmates were scatterd all around and its difficult to connect the way as we will join in this dinner date.

Finally, I need your help to organize this event. Mainly, in dinning because you works in one of the finest restaurant in the city. Furthermore, other duties such as parkings, theme decorations that I already allocated to some other classromates. Lastly, welcoming friends on my farm house will be done by me.If you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to come up with queries. I am always welcome you to give any feedbacks related this formal dinner date.

I eagerly looking forward to your response. Hope you find this event organising idea interesting.

Warm regards,

Raj

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three requested points: you propose a formal dinner at your farmhouse, explain that it would help classmates reconnect and reminisce, and ask John to help with the dining arrangements because of his restaurant experience. The date and its connection to the convocation and weekend also make the plan concrete. Your reasons are relevant and supported with comparisons to a pool or club party. To make the ideas more fully developed, clarify practical details such as the expected number of guests or what specific arrangements John should handle. The closing invitation for suggestions is appropriate, though the request for help could be more direct and specific.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from the proposed event, to reasons for choosing it, to the help you need, followed by a suitable closing. Paragraphing supports this structure, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For example,” and “Finally” help guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth: “Since, it had been ten years” does not lead naturally into the event plan, and the long sentence comparing a dinner with a pool or club party is difficult to follow. The final paragraph also moves quickly between John’s role and tasks assigned to classmates. Use clearer transitions and divide or simplify longer sentences so each point is easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a social letter, including relevant expressions such as “formal dinner,” “reliving the memories,” “natural environment,” and “upcoming events.” These help communicate the plan and its purpose. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices and spelling errors, including “dinning,” “scatterd,” “classromates,” and “feedbacks.” Phrases such as “accessible for everyone to join” and “discuss about” are not natural in this context, while “come up with queries” does not clearly express your invitation for suggestions. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling and word forms; this will make the message sound more fluent and polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause (“because you works in one of the finest restaurant”) and a conditional comparison about choosing a pool or club party. Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “Since, it had been ten years, we left college,” “it is a opportunity,” “you works,” and “I eagerly looking forward,” which show problems with clause construction, articles, agreement, and verb forms. There are also punctuation issues, such as the comma after “Since” and the missing space before “If” in “me.If.” Review sentence formation and verb patterns, and proofread for agreement and articles while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
