IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sudha,

How are you. It has been a decade since we graduated, therefore I would like to organise a reunion and invite all of our fellow classmates and friends. It will be a get together, following a dinner after at the old cafe. Additionally, there will be some games, so guests can engage and it will be fun as well.

The reason I decided venue to be old cafe is because all of us used to bunk classes and sit there for hours. There are numerous emotions attached to that place. Surely, this place will bring back many memories and embrassing stories from our college time.

I have planned the whole event and also took care of the majority of tasks, however I could really use your help with decorations as I am not that creative. Consequently, I would really appreciate if you could arrive an hour early to help me out.

I look forward to see you soon.

Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you propose a reunion dinner at the old café, explain its personal significance through memories of bunking classes, and ask Sudha to help with decorations by arriving early. The purpose and friendly tone are clear throughout, and the café detail gives the plan a personal reason rather than making it generic. The explanation of the celebration itself could be developed further: “a get together” and “some games” are mentioned, but you could say more about what the evening would involve or how classmates would reconnect. Likewise, the request for help is clear but could specify what decorations or preparation you have in mind. These details would make the ideas more fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from greeting and event proposal, to the reason for choosing the café, and then to your request for help and closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “however,” and “Consequently” help connect ideas. The reference to the old café is also carried through logically into the explanation of shared memories. At times, the connections feel slightly mechanical or the sentence boundaries interrupt the flow—for example, “How are you. It has been a decade…” would read more naturally with a question mark and a smoother transition. There is also an unnecessary gap before the second paragraph’s final sentence. More natural transitions and careful punctuation would make the organisation feel more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly reunion letter, including “reunion,” “fellow classmates,” “venue,” “emotions attached,” and “memories.” These choices communicate the plan and its personal significance effectively. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward word choices and collocations: “a get together, following a dinner after” is unclear and repetitive, while “engage” is not the most natural verb for guests taking part in games. “Embrassing” is also misspelled, and “old cafe” could be described more precisely as the café where you used to spend time. Aim for natural combinations and check spelling; this will improve precision while preserving the warm, informal tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause “because all of us used to bunk classes” and the contrast introduced by “however.” Most of the message remains easy to understand, but some grammatical errors are present. “How are you.” needs a question mark, and “I decided venue to be old cafe” is missing necessary grammatical elements, such as “the” and “the venue.” In “I would really appreciate if you could arrive,” the construction needs “it” after “appreciate.” The closing “I look forward to see you” should use “seeing.” Review articles, verb patterns after common expressions, and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
