Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Hi David,
I am planning to organise a park party at the national park center to celebrate our ten year anniversary since graduating college. The park party will have food trucks, live music and games to entertain everyone. I also plan to make the special grilled barbeque chicken we enjoyed during our last year in college.
The park party celebration will be really good for everone, especially those who have not seen each other for a long time. Since graduation, most of our friends have gotten married and had children, this will be an opportunity for everone to meet the wives and kids of all the people who live out of town. Moreover, we will also have the opportunity to catch up and update each other on all that is going on at work
I have done most of the planning for the games which will be played, as well as organized the artists for the live music but I may need some help in reaching out to the food vendors, ensuring they provide the correct amount of food for the people attending.
Best wishes,
Gideon Njoku

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requested points: you propose a park celebration with food trucks, music, games and a familiar barbecue dish; explain that it would reunite friends and let families meet; and ask for help contacting vendors and estimating food quantities. These details make the purpose clear and the ideas are extended with relevant reasons. The explanation of the event’s appeal is especially effective, though the benefit of meeting families and catching up could be developed with a little more specific detail. To strengthen the response further, make the request more direct—for example, ask David to contact particular vendors or confirm expected attendance—and clarify the venue name so the plan feels fully concrete. The friendly opening and closing suit a letter to a college friend.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information follows a clear progression: the first paragraph introduces the celebration, the second explains its social value, and the final paragraph identifies the help needed. This paragraphing makes the letter easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Since graduation” and “Moreover” help connect the reasons. The sequence within paragraphs is also generally logical. To make the cohesion more flexible and polished, avoid repeating “park party” and “opportunity” so closely, and use a clearer transition into the request, such as “Would you be able to…?” The final paragraph combines completed arrangements with the request in one long sentence; separating these points would make the organisation even more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “food trucks,” “live music,” “catch up,” “food vendors” and “attending.” These choices communicate the plan clearly, and the reference to a familiar grilled dish adds a personal touch. There are also some less precise or repetitive expressions: “park party” is repeated, “really good” is general, and “correct amount of food” could be expressed more naturally and specifically. There are spelling errors in “everone” and “barbeque”; these do not prevent understanding but reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully, while keeping the friendly tone appropriate to the recipient.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and more complex structures. For example, “Since graduation, most of our friends have gotten married and had children” uses a time clause effectively, and the sentence beginning “I have done most of the planning…” shows an attempt to combine related information. Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled. A few issues remain: the opening phrase “our ten year anniversary since graduating college” is awkwardly constructed, and the long sentence about friends’ families and people living out of town has an unclear relationship between its clauses. The final sentence also joins several ideas without a clear break. Use a more direct construction such as “the tenth anniversary of our college graduation,” and divide longer sentences where needed.
