IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Betty,
It's been a long time since we last met. I trust you are doing well. I am writing to inform you of my intention to organise a party with you, our two other friends: Nkechi and Chioma and with other of our coursemates in attendace, to commensurate a decade post graduation from college.
I would like to organise a weekend beech get-together party where all of us will be in attendance with our plus one who could be either our spouse or finance. The routine of the event is simple. We will all assemble at 2:00pm, have a boat cruise, followed by a horse drive and afterwards, a beech dinner at 6:00pm before departure at 8:30pm
I heartedly think this would be a good way to celebrate as it will provide us with ample time to unwind from everyday work and home stress while allowing us to mingle, have fun and a good-time which each other, reminiscing on our school days and strengthening our bonds.
I would appreciate if you could help me in looking out for a beech with a good view, a good cuisine with varieties and at affordable rates.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Warm regards,
Mercy

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you propose a beach gathering, explain that it would allow everyone to relax and reconnect, and ask Betty to help find a suitable venue and food. The schedule, including the boat cruise and dinner, gives the plan useful detail, while the reasons for celebrating are relevant and extended. The purpose and friendly relationship are also clear from the opening and closing. Some details could be made more specific to strengthen the proposal—for example, you could say how many classmates you expect or suggest a date or location. The request for help is relevant, though clarifying exactly what Betty should research or arrange would make it more actionable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter has a clear progression from the purpose, to the proposed event, to its benefits and your request for help. Separate paragraphs make these stages easy to follow, and sequencing phrases such as “followed by” and “afterwards” help the reader understand the schedule. The opening and closing also suit a personal letter. Some connections within sentences are less smooth: the first paragraph’s list of friends and classmates is difficult to process, and the event schedule is presented as a dense sequence. Breaking the schedule into clearer steps and using more precise links between the activities would make the organisation feel more effortless. Overall, the structure is logical and the reader can follow the plan.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “unwind,” “reminiscing,” “strengthening our bonds,” and “ample time,” which help express the social benefits of the event. There are also several inaccurate spellings or word choices that reduce precision: “beech” should be “beach,” “commensurate” does not mean celebrate, and “finance” should be “fiancé” if you mean a future spouse. Phrases such as “horse drive” and “a good-time which each other” are also unnatural or unclear. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main plan, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more natural and flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the reason clause “as it will provide us with ample time” and the relative clause “who could be either our spouse or finance.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the event sequence is expressed clearly. Some grammatical issues remain, particularly in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “I would appreciate if you could help me” needs “it” after “appreciate,” and the opening sentence’s list after “with you” is not grammatically well integrated. The phrase “a good-time which each other” also needs a different construction, such as “a good time with each other.” More consistent control of these patterns would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
