Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Baljinder,
I hope you are "hale and hearty". It is ten years since we left the college and I want to organise an allumni meet to celebrate it with all our friends and classmates from college.
I think by organise an event we can enjoy and meet with all of others friends. By this event they share their experience what they are doing in their life and it is usefull for us. It has been ten years that we didn't meet our friends.
To organise this event i need your help in inviting all our classmates and friends. We have to booked a hall for the event , decorate it and also manage the cattering. I think we should buy some gifts for them for managing all this i need your help.
I hope you will help me to organise this event. Iam waiting for your reply as soon as possible.
Your faithfully
Jatinder.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the three requested points: you propose an alumni gathering, explain that classmates can reconnect and share life experiences, and ask Baljinder to help invite people and arrange the venue, decorations, catering, and gifts. These details make the letter relevant and give the reader a clear sense of the plan. However, the explanation of why this celebration would be good is brief, and the event itself remains general: you could specify a meal, reunion party, or another format and explain why it suits the group. The request for help is clear but could be more specific about who will handle each task or when you need assistance. Developing these ideas further would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter has a recognisable structure, with an opening, a paragraph about the benefits of meeting, a paragraph listing practical arrangements, and a closing request. This helps the reader follow the main points. Some connections between ideas are less clear, however. For example, “By this event they share their experience” shifts from your plan to what classmates will do without a smooth link, and the sentence about buying gifts is joined to the request for help in a way that makes the relationship between the ideas unclear. The repeated use of “I think” and “and also” also makes the linking somewhat mechanical. Use clearer transitions and organise the event details in a more deliberate sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main purpose and practical arrangements, including “celebrate,” “experience,” “inviting,” “decorate,” and “catering.” There are also attempts at less common or task-specific expressions, such as “alumni meet.” However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, including “allumni,” “usefull,” and “cattering.” Some phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “all of others friends” and “managing all this,” which may make the reader pause. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. A wider set of precise expressions for describing the event and assigning responsibilities would also help you communicate more flexibly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Your letter communicates its basic meaning, and you attempt both simple and longer sentence forms. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in verb forms, sentence construction, articles, and punctuation. For example, “by organise an event” needs a gerund form, while “We have to booked a hall” uses the wrong verb form after “have to.” In “they share their experience what they are doing,” the clauses are not joined grammatically, and “It has been ten years that we didn't meet” has an inaccurate tense pattern. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “i” and the spacing around commas. Practise building accurate sentences with infinitives, gerunds, and relative clauses before adding more complexity.
