IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mark,
How's it going? I'm writing to you because I may need help with organising a tenth anniversary celebration with all our batchmates.
As you know it's almost ten years since our graduation and we hadn't enjoyed a get-together ever since. What I was thinking is that why don't we plan a meetup at the same restaurant that we used to go back in the days.
I think this will be the best way to celebrate because it will renew all those distant memories that we all cherish. We can have the same drinks session followed by the blunders we made playing charades. I just can't wait for it!
I need a bit of help mate. The thing is that I'm not in touch with many people now as I've quitted social media for good. The only friends I can contact are in my phone. Can you help me out by sending a detailed broadcast on all the social media platforms in our groups so that they're aware of the date and time.
I'd love to hear back from you.
Cheers,
Chris

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three points and maintains an appropriate, friendly tone for writing to Mark. You propose a specific celebration—a reunion at the restaurant you used to visit—and explain its appeal through shared memories and activities such as charades. You also make a clear request for help publicising the date and time. The explanation of why this venue and format would be good is relevant, but it is brief: “renew all those distant memories” could be supported with a little more detail about how the familiar setting would bring classmates together. The practical request could also be more fully developed by suggesting that Mark help choose a date or confirm attendance. The task is covered, though some ideas need further extension.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the anniversary, suggest the event, explain its appeal, and then ask for help. Paragraphing supports these stages, and the opening and closing are suitable for an informal letter. Linking expressions such as “As you know,” “I think,” and “The thing is” help guide the reader, while the reference to shared college experiences gives the message a natural flow. Some connections could be made more precise. For example, the shift from the proposed reunion to “the same drinks session” is understandable but could be linked more explicitly to the event plan. The final request also combines several details in one sentence; separating the request from the explanation of your limited contacts would make the progression even clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for an informal reunion letter, including “anniversary celebration,” “get-together,” “cherish,” and “broadcast.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the friendly expressions suit the relationship with Mark. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural word choices and collocations. “All our batchmates” is less natural in this context than “all our classmates,” and “a detailed broadcast” does not clearly describe a message inviting people to an event. “Quitted social media” is also an awkward choice of verb form in this expression. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording while keeping the conversational tone; this would make the letter sound more fluent and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex forms, such as “because I may need help” and the conditional question “why don't we plan a meetup…”. Most sentences are easy to understand, and the errors do not prevent communication. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. In “we hadn't enjoyed a get-together ever since,” the past perfect does not fit the time reference; use the present perfect with “since.” The clause “What I was thinking is that why don't we plan…” also combines structures awkwardly and would be clearer as “I was thinking we could plan…” In addition, “I've quitted” uses an incorrect verb form. Review tense choice and verb forms, and simplify sentences when combining several patterns.
