Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Makeet,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I am going to organise a party for the celebration of our college anniversary. I just want to organise a small event at the Taz Hotel. I already booked a small hall over there for 20 People. I am going to call all our group members. I will arange dinner with some music party. I will do some decoration over the chairs and on the dance floor.

I am thinking to organise the event because i was missing my college days, and i want to spend quality of time with all you guys. I think this idea will work , we can share our life stories during dinner time and after that we can enjoy dance with each other to make our college memories fresh.

i just need one favour from you. can you please reach at the hotel one hour ago to see the arrangements,Because I need one person to help memfor all these preprations.

Hope you will be there on time. I am waiting for your response.

your friend,

Elli

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you propose a dinner-and-music party at the Taz Hotel, explain that you miss college and want to share life stories and revive memories, and ask your friend to arrive early to help. These details make the purpose clear and the tone is suitably friendly. The event plan is specific, but the reason for choosing this format and the practical help needed are less fully developed; for example, you could explain why the hotel suits the group and name particular arrangements your friend could manage. The request to arrive “one hour ago” is also unclear, so state the intended time directly. More complete development of these points would make the response more fully effective.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible overall order: you introduce the event, explain your motivation, then make a request and close. This gives the reader a clear progression, and the paragraphs broadly separate the main purposes. Some links between ideas are mechanical, however, with repeated use of “I” and “I am going to,” and the event details are presented as a series of short statements. The final request is also crowded into one sentence, making the arrangements harder to follow. Use clearer paragraphing and connect related details more naturally—for instance, group the venue, guest list, dinner and music together, then give the request in a separate, direct sentence. This would make the organisation smoother and the cohesion less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate to communicate the event and its purpose, with relevant expressions such as “quality of time,” “life stories” and “college memories.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “for the celebration of our college anniversary” is awkward, and “decoration over the chairs” does not express the intended meaning naturally. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “arange” and “preprations.” Aim for more natural phrases and check spelling carefully. A broader set of precise event-planning terms would help you describe the celebration and your friend’s role more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You communicate the main message using mostly simple sentences and make some attempts to combine ideas, such as explaining that you want to spend time with your classmates and share stories. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors in sentence formation and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “I am thinking to organise” needs a different verb pattern, while “can you please reach at the hotel one hour ago” has an unclear time construction. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “i” and “Because,” and several sentences run together around the request. Practise accurate infinitive and verb patterns, and use full stops and question marks to separate ideas. Greater control would make the letter easier to read.
