IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. It has been almost a decade has been passed since we left the college. As we all did not meet each other since so long I thought we should plan something. Therefore, I am arranging a small party for all our class fellows!
First I thought I book a hotel where we can have dance and foods but then I come up with an idea that we should do a barbecue party at our local park.
The reason I believe it would be a great idea is because it is summer going on so we can enjoy the sunny weather outside alongwith foods and some entertainment things like dancing and singing.
If possible for you can you please inquire in our local community park to reserve a shelter in advance so we can get our own space. Because I might be busy for some office works for one week so I won't be able to go there.
I will appreciate your help.
Yours faithfully,
Jack

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you propose a barbecue at the local park, explain that summer weather would make an outdoor gathering enjoyable, and ask John to reserve a shelter. The purpose and friendly tone are clear, and the event is relevant to the anniversary. The explanation is less fully developed than the plan itself: “some entertainment things like dancing and singing” is quite general, and you could explain more specifically why this format would suit your classmates or help everyone reconnect. The request for help is practical, but adding details such as a date, expected numbers, or when you need confirmation would make it more complete. You already provide a clear, relevant response; fuller support for the reasons and arrangements would strengthen it further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the reunion, describe the event, give your reason, and then make a request. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, while “First,” “but then,” and “Therefore” guide the reader through your thinking. Some links are less smooth or precise. For example, “As we all did not meet each other since so long” is difficult to follow, and “Because I might be busy…” is left as a fragment after the request. The transition from the initial hotel idea to the barbecue is understandable, but could be expressed more directly. The organisation is coherent overall; more natural linking and clearer sentence connections would make the progression feel less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and its practical arrangements, including “barbecue party,” “sunny weather,” “reserve a shelter,” and “in advance.” However, several choices are noticeably unnatural or imprecise, such as “foods,” “entertainment things,” “class fellows,” and “some office works.” These phrases make parts of the letter sound less fluent, even though the intended meaning is generally clear. There is some variety in the vocabulary, but collocation and word choice are not consistently controlled. Aim to learn common word partnerships for social events and requests, and choose more precise expressions for activities and work commitments. This would make the letter sound more natural and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and longer sentence forms, including a reason clause beginning “The reason I believe…” and a conditional request to John. The main message remains understandable, but some errors affect accuracy. “It has been almost a decade has been passed” combines two verb patterns; use “It has been almost a decade since we left college.” In “If possible for you can you please inquire,” the conditional structure is incomplete, and “Because I might be busy…” is a sentence fragment. There are also errors in tense and agreement, as in “I thought I book” and “I come up with.” These examples show that complex structures are attempted, but need more reliable control of verb forms and complete sentences.
