IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sibi,

I hope you are well. I hope your business and family is doing well. I am writing to to inform you about my upcoming anniversary and would love you to help me inform our other classmates as i would also love them to be present as well.

I am planning on making the celebraton a bit of a big event with plenty of food, drinks, small chops and sovenirs. I thought of celebrating it this way because i also want to make it a kind of get together for us as classmates since its been a years will met.

I will really need your help with some other ideas that will make the celebraton interesting and memorable. I also need help with organizing the program on that day and would really appreciate if you can make it to my place a day before the event.

Extend my regards to David, Matthew, Sonia and the rest of the group. I hope to see you all soon.

Yours sincerely,

choice.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you propose a celebration with “plenty of food, drinks” and souvenirs, explain that it could be a get-together after time apart, and ask Sibi to share ideas and help organise the programme. The purpose and friendly relationship are clear. However, some parts are less fully developed: the reason for choosing this particular event is brief, and the practical help requested could be more specific—for example, asking Sibi to contact named classmates, arrange food, or confirm a venue. The phrase “my upcoming anniversary” is also unclear because the occasion is the ten-year anniversary of leaving college. Clarifying the event and adding a little detail to the reasons and requests would make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: greeting and purpose, event plan and reason, request for help, then a friendly closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “because” and “also” help connect ideas. The reader can follow the main message without difficulty. To make the organisation more polished, avoid repeating “I hope” in the opening and make the transition from the event description to its purpose more explicit. Some references are not fully clear, particularly “my upcoming anniversary” and “since its been a years will met,” so the reader has to infer the intended meaning. More precise referencing and a slightly clearer separation of the event details from the requests would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “celebration,” “classmates,” “organizing the program,” and “memorable.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “small chops” and “get together,” which help convey the kind of event you have in mind. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or informal choices reduce accuracy, including “celebraton,” “sovenirs,” and “a bit of a big event.” “Small chops” may also be unfamiliar to some readers, so a clearer description would help. Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as “a large celebration” and “a reunion,” while keeping the warm, personal tone appropriate for a friend.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. For example, “I am planning on making the celebration…” and “I also need help with organizing…” communicate your plans and requests. Some grammatical errors remain, however: “your business and family is” has subject–verb disagreement, “I am writing to to inform” repeats the infinitive marker, and “since its been a years will met” has problems with tense, agreement, and sentence construction. The request “would really appreciate if you can make it” also needs a subject and a more suitable verb form. Check agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, and proofread for repeated words; these changes would make your varied structures more consistently accurate.
