IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Jake,

I hope everything is good with you. I am writing this to let you know that I was planning to organise an event to celebrate our 10th year anniversary. Cannot believe its already been a decade. I was thinking to connect with all our classmates and friends just to know what they think about this. Honestly, I am so excited about this.

This is my plan, organsie a small functions in our old classroom where we can bring our familes and friends, we can share our stories and old memories and also to meet each others families. It would be a great way to reconnect with them even after these many years. I have another reason as well, most of our batchmates are well settled now, so connecting with them would be an opportunity for those who are struggling now especially like looking a job or so.

I need your help as always to organise this smoothly. I was wondering if you could help me with reaching out to more of our classmates, if you have please send more contacts. Also, to connect with the management.

I will be waiting to hear your thoughts on this.

Warmly,

Name

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and maintain an appropriate, friendly tone for writing to a college friend. The proposed reunion is clear: meeting in the old classroom with families, sharing memories, and reconnecting. You also explain why it could help classmates who are looking for work, and ask Jake to contact classmates and the college management. These relevant details show good coverage of the task. However, some ideas are not fully developed: for example, you could explain how the event would support job-seeking classmates, or specify what you need Jake to do when contacting management. The plan is understandable, but adding a little more detail and making the requests more precise would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure: an opening, a paragraph describing the event and its benefits, a request for help, and a closing. The ideas generally progress in a sensible order, and phrases such as “This is my plan” and “I need your help” guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth, however. The opening spends several sentences on your excitement before the event plan is introduced, and “I have another reason as well” does not clearly distinguish the social benefit from the employment benefit. The request paragraph also ends abruptly with “Also, to connect with the management.” Grouping related points more tightly and linking them with clearer transitions would make the progression more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “reconnect,” “old memories,” “batchmates,” and “well settled.” The friendly expressions suit the audience, and the reader can understand the proposed event and requests. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “10th year anniversary,” “organise a small functions,” and “connect with them.” There are also spelling errors, including “organsie” and “familes,” which reduce accuracy. Some phrases, such as “everything is good with you” and “looking a job or so,” are not natural in this context. Aim for more precise, conventional expressions and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more extended sentences, and most of the message remains understandable. For instance, the sentence explaining that classmates are settled and that reconnecting could help job-seekers conveys a more complex idea. However, some grammatical errors affect accuracy: “Cannot believe its already been a decade” lacks a subject and uses an incorrect form of “it’s”; “I was thinking to connect” has an awkward verb pattern; and “if you have please send more contacts” is incomplete and unclear in structure. There are also issues with articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, as in “a small functions” and the fragment “Also, to connect with the management.” Practise complete clauses and accurate verb patterns while retaining your attempts at longer sentences.
