Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Alex,

How are you? I hope you are doing well! its been 10 long years since we friends meet each other. I'm planning to arrange a reunion party at community hall in Mumbai ASAP. We have to make this event a memorable one. P.S. inviting our college friends to the party is your responsibility.

Celebrating in community hall will make our memories refreshed and also it will give as a break from our busy schedule. We will have dance, games and many other activities. also,we will invite families so that it will be great fun.

I will contact Amy, as she is good in arranging party refreshments and decoration teams. For music I will contact some artist so that songs will not stop at any time. BTW, I heard Rahul and Annie eloped together. I will arrange camera to take pics so that we will remember this party even we are old.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best Wishes,

Rini

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address all three points: you propose a reunion party at a community hall, explain that it could refresh shared memories and offer a break from busy schedules, and mention help with invitations, refreshments, decoration, music and photography. These details make the plan understandable. However, the reasons for choosing this format are only briefly explained, and the practical help you need from Alex is not clearly set out: “inviting our college friends … is your responsibility” is direct, but the other tasks are mostly described as things you will arrange yourself. Develop the benefits and make the request to your friend more specific—for example, ask Alex to confirm the venue or coordinate activities—so the purpose and responsibilities are clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, with an opening, separate paragraphs for the celebration and arrangements, and an appropriate closing. The ideas are generally relevant and the reader can follow the main plan. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes abrupt: “P.S.” introduces an important invitation request before the reasons for the event, while “BTW” shifts suddenly to unrelated personal news about Rahul and Annie. Some links are also mechanical or unclear, such as “also” before the family invitation and the repeated use of “so that.” Group the request for Alex’s help with the organising details, remove or connect the aside, and use clearer transitions to show how each detail supports the plan.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and its arrangements, including “reunion party,” “community hall,” “refreshments,” “decoration,” and “memorable.” There are also attempts to express the purpose of the celebration, such as “a break from our busy schedule.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise, including “make our memories refreshed,” “contact some artist,” and “take pics.” “ASAP” and “BTW” are informal abbreviations that do not fit smoothly with the otherwise friendly letter. Aim for more natural collocations and consistent tone, such as saying the event will “bring back memories,” hiring a musician, and taking photographs. This would make your meaning more precise and polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You communicate the main ideas using mostly simple sentences, with some attempts to link clauses, for example, “I hope you are doing well” and “so that it will be great fun.” However, errors occur in verb forms, articles, agreement and punctuation. In “its been 10 long years since we friends meet each other,” the contraction needs an apostrophe and the clause requires a past-tense verb; “at community hall” also needs an article. The sentence beginning “Celebrating in community hall” has a singular/plural mismatch in “it will give as a break,” and “also,we” needs correct capitalization and spacing. Practise accurate past-time clauses and article use, and proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation.
